Job summary
The Marie Curie Hospice, Cardiff and the Vale is one of nine Marie Curie hospices in the UK and the only Marie Curie hospice in Wales. The hospice is commissioned to provide 20 in-patient specialist palliative care beds and admits over 300 patients per year split across two wards. The hospice beds are primarily used by patients in the C&V UHB area and are the only specialist palliative care beds in that area. The hospice also provides community specialist palliative care services for patients in the Vale of Glamorgan.
The duties of the post include day-to-day care of patients on the inpatient wards at the hospice. You will work with other junior/senior staff within the multidisciplinary team, including Pharmacist, Allied healthcare professionals and Chaplain. The hospice takes direct admissions from home as well as transfers from other hospitals.
Main duties of the job
You will be expected to be able to cover other gaps in the service to ensure timely assessment and review of patients referred and already known to the service. This may include supporting the community palliative care team and the expanding outpatient and day services at the hospice. Therefore, a flexible approach that prioritises patient care is required.
First on call responsibilities are to provide support to the hospice inpatients and admission of urgent referrals out of hours. The on call is non-resident and is supported by a second on call consultant. Depending on experience the post holder may also provide specialist palliative care telephone advice and support out of hours to healthcare professionals in the community and hospital setting across Southeast Wales. The rota frequency is 1 in 6 or less frequent.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
