Job summary

The post holder will be part of the Radiation Protection Service team (RPS Cardiff) that provides Radiation Protection Advisory and Support services, via Service Level Agreements, to all NHS Trusts in South East Wales and to other customers in the private health care sector, universities, industry, etc., throughout Wales and the rest of the UK.

The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2018 require Employers to have access to a medical physics expert for consultation on optimisation of patient doses and quality assurance in diagnostic radiology and to provide advice on radiation protection relating specifically to medical exposures.

The Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 require the Employer to appoint a radiation protection adviser A key purpose of this job is to fulfil this requirement. Arrangements will be made for formal recognition of status as MPE for diagnostic radiology in accordance with the statutory requirements of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 with customers via service level agreements.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for:

Acting as a Radiation Protection Adviser for the service and to be appointed in this role by Velindre NHS Trust and its client organisations.

Acting as an MPE for diagnostic radiology in health care, medical research and development and teaching and to be appointed in this role by Velindre NHS Trust and its client organisations.

Planning and delivering a programme of audit of patient radiation doses in diagnostic radiology against national and local diagnostic reference levels

Managing projects undertaken in support of developments in radiation protection both within Velindre NHS Trust and its client organisations

Providing scientific support for all current metrology services and researching and developing new metrology services.

Providing software support where appropriate for IT applications associated with the work of RPS Cardiff and developing new applications as required.

  • Experience in the application of radiation protection practice in the field of diagnostic radiology.

Desirable

  • Experience in the application of radiation protection practise in the fields of nuclear medicine and radiotherapy

Qualifications

  • MSc Medical Physics or equivalent.
  • UK HPC Clinical Scientist Registration to practise Medical Physics, but for non-UK candidates the certainty of getting i

  • Accreditation as a Medical Physics Expert for diagnostic radiology
  • Eligibility to hold MIPEM or equivalent status.

Desirable

  • PhD in Medical Physics.

  • Able to communicate difficult scientific issues to scientists and non-scientists with good verbal, written and audio-visual production & presentation skills.
  • Good negotiator in advising on the implementation of statutory requirements where there may be local disagreement or competing requirements from legislation or professional guidance relating to other areas of endeavour.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with a range of medical image processing software packages.
  • Possession of a driving licence or the preparedness to obtain one.
