Job summary
There is an opportunity for Advanced Nurse Practitioners to join the Acute Oncology / Unscheduled Care team in order to support provision of advanced nursing practice cover at Velindre Cancer Centre. You will join a supportive, forward thinking and innovative multi-disciplinary team who are committed to improving the unscheduled care service for patients who develop complications as a result of their cancer or cancer treatments.
Therefore, you must have an understanding of the needs of acutely unwell cancer patients; possess advanced communication skills for advising patients, relatives and other health professionals along with knowledge of managing acute conditions, disease progression complications, and management of systemic anti-cancer treatment complications.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will take a lead role in the clinical assessment of unscheduled hospital presentations for oncology patients, who often have complex and undetermined clinical conditions and may be acutely unwell. The Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) will work autonomously within a defined scope of practice, in order to undertake history taking, clinical patient assessment, formulating a diagnosis and initiating a clinical management plan and appropriate supportive management.
This will include supporting the patient Treatment helpline, and may include extended roles such as PICC placement, management of complications of IV access and performing abdominal paracentesis. The ANP will order investigations, make appropriate/ timely referrals and maintain relevant clinical records. Advanced life support skills and Non-medical prescribing are fundamental in supporting this role.
The ANP will work alongside the medical staff, maintaining good communication and collaboration between the various multidisciplinary teams both internal and external to Velindre. Evidence based care will be inherent in their practice, ensuring that best practice is disseminated throughout the clinical areas.
