Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a dynamic and rapidly growing team as a National Safeguarding Lead Nurse / Practitioner within the National Safeguarding Service Division, based in the Nursing, Quality and Integrated Governance (NQIG) Directorate.

The NQIG Directorate brings together three key divisions: Nursing and Quality, Integrated Governance, and the National Safeguarding Service. Our shared mission is to enhance quality and capability across public health services in Wales. We do this by engaging with, enabling, and empowering those we work with and serve, helping to build a healthier future for all.The National Safeguarding Service operates within Public Health Wales as a team of subject matter experts, providing strategic direction and professional leadership to strengthen safeguarding practices across the NHS in Wales.

The service enables an outward-facing approach, offering leadership and support to the NHS Wales Safeguarding Network.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide strategic and professional leadership to deliver national safeguarding priorities across NHS Wales.
  • Lead national safeguarding quality assurance and improvement activity, including audits, reviews and embedding system-wide learning.
  • Develop and implement safeguarding frameworks, policies and standards aligned to legislation and statutory guidance.
  • Provide expert safeguarding advice and clinical leadership in complex cases, supporting risk assessment and escalation.
  • Analyse safeguarding data and intelligence to inform national reporting, assurance and improvement.
  • Represent the National Safeguarding Service at national and multi-agency forums, influencing decision-making.
  • Prepare and present assurance reports and briefings for senior leaders and governance groups.
  • Promote a culture of learning, reflective practice and continuous improvement through leadership, supervision and training development.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

  • Qualified professional with current NMC registration or other professionally registered qualification with a regulatory body.
  • Graduate Degree in related subject
  • Master's Degree or equivalent in appropriate health or social care related subjects.
  • Level 4 safeguarding children and adults at risk.
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
  • Up to date knowledge of the NHS Wales health and safeguarding agenda including current policy, statutory guidance and key national drivers.
  • In depth working knowledge of safeguarding legislation, regulation and national best practice relating children and adults at risk.
  • Demonstrable understanding of quality improvement principles including the use of audit and assurance.

Desirable

  • Specialist or advanced knowledge of multi-agency safeguarding systems, including statutory review processes (e.g. SUSRs) and system of learning.
  • Professional Nurse Advocate.
  • Teaching qualification.
  • PREVENT trained
  • Post registration formal qualification.

  • Significant demonstrable experience in the field of safeguarding children and adults at risk.
  • Experience of providing senior professional leadership for safeguarding services, acting as deputy or delegated lead for defined safeguarding portfolios.

  • Senior leadership experience in health and multi-professional/multi- agency environment.
  • Producing, developing and implementing policies and practice guidelines.
