Job summary
This is a unique opportunity to work in a Mycology Reference Laboratory and contribute to the continued development of Mycology services for Wales. The laboratory offers access to the full breadth of microbiology methodology, from conventional culture and microscopic investigations through to serological and molecular tests and provides both reference and primary diagnostic services for the diagnosis of fungal disease ranging from superficial through to invasive infection. The laboratory also has an international reputation for undertaking R&D which leads to cutting-edge diagnostic service.
The laboratory is an IBMS approved training laboratory. The Public Health Wales, Microbiology network is ISO 15189 accredited.
An understanding of good laboratory practice and ISO15189 quality management is essential.
Applications are invited from candidates who are enthusiastic, well-motivated and innovative, with good organisational and practical abilities supported by scientific knowledge.
The successful applicant will be expected to assist in the provision of a full diagnostic mycology service. Experience of working in a clinical mycology laboratory is not essential, but the candidate must have experience of working in a medical microbiology laboratory.
Main duties of the job
Candidates should possess well developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to support individual and team working. Being flexible in your approach to work, self-motivated and with good practical skills will be fundamental to your role.
You will use your knowledge and skills as a Biomedical Scientist to contribute primarily diagnostic but also research work. You will assist in building a strong team and support the Senior Biomedical Scientists to enable continual improvements in the department and throughout the Microbiology Network.
To ensure that the laboratory can provide a 6/7-day service, depending on service demands, the post holder will be expected to participate in weekend & Bank Holiday working.

Public Health Wales Microbiology Cardiff is one of the largest Microbiology Laboratories in Wales, providing diagnostic services to hospitals, clinics and general practitioners in South Glamorgan and throughout the Principality. The laboratory offers a comprehensive bacteriology service, incorporates a specialist virology centre, Molecular Diagnostic Unit and Regional Mycology Unit, the Wales Centre for Mycobacteria and the National Anaerobe Reference Unit.
Informal visits to the laboratory are encouraged only for candidates who have been shortlisted.
