Lead Radiographer - Lung Cancer Screening

Job summary

Following a positive recommendation from the UK National Screening Committee and the successful delivery of a pilot in the North Rhondda area, Welsh Government have approved for lung cancer screening to be implemented as a new screening programme in Wales. This represents a significant development for health services in Wales and this post offers an exciting opportunity for a driven and innovative individual to play a key role in this, leading the planning and implementation of the CT scanning element of the lung cancer screening pathway, to ensure that the benefits delivered are maximised for the population.

You will join our existing programme team and play a key role in the strategic planning, delivery, and benefits realisation of introducing a new programme on a national scale. Working collaboratively as part of the Lung Screening Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and with the wider Public Health Wales teams and external stakeholders, you will lead the planning and delivery of the CT scanning part of the lung screening pathway (with the support of the wider SLT) and contribute to the successful delivery of the programme as a whole.

We are looking for someone with a proven track record of successfully managing teams and services and delivering service change, from planning through to delivery. You will be diligent in your approach, able to work independently and have an innovative, problem-solving approach, with strong stakeholder management skills.

Main duties of the job

As the Lead Radiographer working in the Lung Screening Wales programme team you will play a critical role in the planning and delivery of lung cancer screening as a new screening programme in Wales, acting as a member of the SLT.

There are multiple steps in the lung cancer screening pathway, including cohort identification and invitation, risk assessment, CT scanning, CT scan reporting, integrated smoking cessation and actioning results.

The Lead Radiographer will lead the planning and delivery of the CT scanning element of the pathway, which is planned to be delivered using mobile CT scanners supported by small teams of Radiographer / Radiographer Assistants covering specified regions across Wales.

The focus of the role will initially be on establishing the service e.g. procurement of mobile CT scanners and planning for recruitment of the new teams, and will then move into ongoing delivery once the service is established.This role will therefore require a broad knowledge and skill set to ensure the successful implementation and ongoing delivery of this new service across Wales.

The role will work as part of the wider Senior Leadership Team and will therefore be supported by other members of this team, including Programme Managers and Clinical Leads, as well as the wider Public Health Wales teams, including accessing the knowledge and expertise from existing screening services.
