Job summary

Diabetic Eye Screening Wales (DESW) are seeking an enthusiastic and committed full time retinal grader to join our busy grading team based at Treforest, South Wales.

You will be responsible for assessing retinal images and identifying the presence and severity of diabetic eye disease (diabetic retinopathy). This is a specialised role, using dedicated software to examine the photographic image in detail. This will require high levels of concentration and review, and extended periods of time using display screen equipment.

Main duties of the job

A retinal graders main duty is the grading and assessment of retinal images and identifying those that require priority grading, applying appropriate action and management to the individual's screening episode. You will need to be able to follow strict criteria, and work within programme standard operating procedures and guidelines. Undertaking additional duties will also be required, such as dealing with queries, referring participants to secondary care and interpreting feedback after referral. A good level of administrative ability and computer literacy will be required

You may need to engage with DESW participants, responding to queries and explaining screening results. Liaising with other departments within the organisation, service clinicians and communicating with secondary care contacts is required.

You will be expected to undergo regular training sessions and be able to comply with policies and procedures for the programme and for PHW, such as participant confidentiality and data security.

You will also actively take part in internal and external quality assurance processes and maintain or exceed agreed competency levels.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

In addition, we will support you to complete an accredited level 4 Diploma in Diabetic Eye Grading (Agored Cymru) which is a requirement for the role.
