Job summary

Diabetic Eye Screening Wales (DESW) is establishing a new regional team in Newtown, Powys, as part of our Mid-Wales transformation project. This is your opportunity to be part of a dynamic team dedicated to delivering an excellent screening service, ensuring equal access to eye screening across Wales.

About the Role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed senior retinal screener to join our new team. We are looking for an individual who is experienced in leading a team, an excellent communicator, and competent problem solver, as well as having the ability to be hands-on and flexible with travel throughout Mid-Wales.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  • Line management of a cohort of screening Health care support workers
  • Support service delivery, responding to local operational issues (e.g. stock and equipment delivery to remote sites, arrangement of vehicle repair).
  • Be highly visible to maintain strong communication links with their own staff and across the wider All Wales team.
  • Manage team day to day; including absence, training, development and performance.
  • Deliver clinics directly in the role of screener on a rostered basis, as well as supporting team to guide participants through screening appointments, maintaining accurate record-keeping (administer eye drops and capture retinal images).
  • Ensure DESW protocols and standard operating procedures are adhered to.
  • Work towards attaining a retinal screening Diploma to practice independently, with full training and support provided.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent communication skills and experience leading a team (within a healthcare environment is advantageous)
  • Experience with SLR digital cameras is desirable; prior experience with retinal fundus cameras is advantageous.
  • Flexibility to drive the Trust's Light Goods Vehicle daily to clinic venues primarily across Powys and occasionally other regions within Wales.
