Main duties of the job
PenGU has delivered pathogen genomics services to date as a specialist laboratory within PHW Microbiology, which is part of the Health Protection and Screening Services (HPSS) directorate. However, the growth of pathogen genomics now offers data that can be directly integrated into public health analysis and decision-making in real time. This has seen the formation of a Public Health Genomics Programme within PHW. The remit of the programme is currently under active development, but is likely to include:
- Developing new end-to-end services within/led by PHW with pathogen genomics at the centre, going beyond current reference laboratory services
- Adding genomics capabilities to existing PHW reference laboratories (both Welsh and Welsh-hosted UK) to enhance service delivery and provide national capabilities
- Exploiting the expertise that PHW has, transforming and progressing staff so that genomics becomes a core part of what we do
- Engaging with research and supporting the development of a vibrant research environment that enables the translation of cutting-edge approaches into service
Providing a framework for the effective integration and delivery of public health genomics into PHW, operating as a key point of contact with GPW to coordinate and develop join activities in the area of public health.
