Job summary

Applications are invited for a Junior Clinical Fellow in the Microbiology department for Public Health Wales (PHW), Cardiff. The post holder will be expected to undertake duties at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) site, working primarily within the PHW laboratory supporting Clinical Microbiology and Virology services.

Microbiology Cardiff is one of the largest laboratories in England and Wales and incorporates laboratories within UHW and Llandough Hospital. It undertakes acute microbiology services for all hospitals, community and general practitioner services covered by Cardiff and Vale University Health board, and for Velindre University NHS Trust. Reference microbiology, particularly virology, mycobacteriology, molecular diagnostics services and pathogen genomics are provided for the whole of Wales and for some specialist services the service is UK wide. All laboratories are UKAS accredited.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will form part of the clinical infection team and will be responsible for interpreting and communicating significant results to inpatient and outpatient teams for the UHB. They will support and attend specialist infection MDTs, ward rounds and clinical infection cases. The team consists of Microbiology, Virology & Infectious Diseases consultants and SPRs working closely with clinical and biomedical scientists and the infection control team.

The post holder will be supervised by the on call clinical microbiologist/ clinical virologist.

The post holder will be encouraged to participate in education, teaching and research activities being undertaken by the department.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
