Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the newly established NHS Wales Executive in this new critical senior leadership role influencing, leading and supporting quality improvement and patient safety across the whole NHS system in Wales.

Professionally accountable to and working closely with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for Wales, you will provide expert advice and support concerning quality improvement and patient safety issues across the NHS in Wales. Having oversight of the quality and safety of care provided across Wales, you will work with colleagues from across the NHS Executive and Welsh Government to support stronger arrangements for organisations that are not operating as expected.

The successful candidate will be proficient in quality improvement with demonstrable experience of strong, inspirational, strategic leadership across operational and professional service delivery contexts. With a passion for quality, the Deputy Director will champion and embed a culture across the system of continuous improvement across programmes of work relating to, and advising on national Welsh Government policy and strategy in line with CNO priorities.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the National Director of NHS Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, you will build excellent working relationships with all members of the Senior Leadership Team in the NHS Executive, particularly the Director of the National Clinical Framework to support the implementation of the Framework and other national programmes. Quickly establishing a leadership role across the NHS in Wales and beyond, the successful candidate will work closely with Welsh Government colleagues, and senior leaders on a day to day basis.

The NHS Executive is hosted by Public Health Wales, but is governed as an agency of Welsh Government, based in the NHS.

The NHS Wales Executive is a new, national support function and an essential element in making the health system in Wales fit for the future and achieving A Healthier Wales vision of a whole-system approach to providing excellent health and social care across Wales. Working on behalf of Welsh Government, the NHS Wales Executive's role in supporting this mission is to provide strong national leadership and strategic direction, and enable, support and, where necessary, intervene to ensure the delivery of national priorities and standards, and safeguard and improve the quality and safety of care. The key purpose of the Executive is to drive improvements in the quality and safety of care to achieve better, fairer healthcare outcomes for the people of Wales.
