Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) to join the Hospital At Night team within the Medicine Division at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.

As a large District General Hospital, we offer the opportunity to develop your career as an HCSW within the H@N team.

Combined with ongoing training and education this opportunity affords the successful candidate development and support including study days, team development days with in-situ simulation.

Main duties of the job

1. At the direction of the hospital at night clinical coordinator perform cannulation, phlebotomy, urinary catheterisation, ECGs ABG sampling and assist the ward based healthcare team with the provision of clinical care for a defined group of patients.

2. Ensure patient safety is maintained and patient experience is positive by treating all patients, relatives and colleagues with respect, dignity and courtesy in accordance with Trust values.

3. Ensuring that at all times you act within your sphere of competence.

Specific Core Functions

Patient Safety, Patient Experience and Use of Resources.

1. At the direction of the Hospital at Night clinical coordinator perform cannulation, phlebotomy, urinary catheterisation, ECGs, ABG sampling and assist the ward based healthcare team with the provision of clinical care for a defined group of patients. This must be done as per the Trusts policies and competency framework.

2. Keep a detailed log of the above tasks completed during the course of duties.

3. Ensure that all tasks are reported back to the clinical coordinator whether complete or not.

4. Ensure all possible steps are taken to safeguard the welfare, safety and security of patients, visitors and staff in accordance with Trust policies.

5. Provide care to patients to maintain their personal hygiene and physical comfort ensuring that their privacy and dignity is maintained at all times. Work in partnership with patients to respect their rights and choices.

6. Recognise patients needs and changing condition and respond appropriately and effectively.

Assist in the emergency resuscitation of patients as per Portsmouth Hospitals Resuscitation Policy.

7. Maintain dignity, comfort and sensitivity of patients and their relatives during end of life care.

8. Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and ensure follow Trust Policy regarding Infection Control and Prevention.

9. Report adverse incidents in accordance with Trust policy

10. Record and report information onto patient administration systems in written and electronic format, including assisting generic admin duties to assist the team.

11. Promote and demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication at all times with patients, relatives and colleagues recognising the need for tact, consideration and confidentiality.

12. Requirement to work in environment with unpleasant working conditions e.g. bodily fluids.

13. Requirement to work as a lone worker.

14. Requirement to work only night duty.

15. Undertake specific organisational and administrative duties as required.

16. Assist other clinical areas within the Trust as the clinical situation and staffing levels require.

17. Participate in innovation and quality of healthcare by attending ward or department meetings, participate in projects, including audit and quality initiatives pertinent to the role.

18. Act as a link or associate link for a specific area of practice, e.g. health and safety, infection control.

19. Take part in the orientation/induction of new Hospital at Night assistant practitioners or medical assistants and provide support and development to enable them to develop the skills and knowledge required for their role.
