An exciting opportunity to join the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Oral Surgery/Orthodontics at DCT level has arisen. We are an established, highly regarded DCT training unit, who take pride in ensuring we create a supportive and friendly learning environment, with lots of learning and hands-on opportunities.
The successful applicants will be employed locally by Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, and will have the opportunity to participate in the Deanery DCT study day programme if appropriate for the appointed candidates educational requirements. The successful candidates will have an assigned Educational Supervisor to support them in developing and following a learning agreement in addition to maintaining a portfolio. This ensures that the role will be equivalent to a DCT post.
The team you will join consists of 8 dental core level trainees (mixture of Deanery and locally employed) working within Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Surgery. The post is at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.
Portsmouth is a vibrant seaside university city with lots going on, and close to the South Downs and New Forest National parks as well as the Isle of Wight.
There are regular Deanery regional study days, as well as weekly in-house teaching and a journal club. The library facilities are in the postgraduate education centre with access to books and journals, and facilities to order those not on the shelves.
Main duties of the job
You will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of the work of the department including out-patient clinics, operating sessions and the management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department with dental/maxillofacial trauma and emergencies, as well as the care of in-patients varying from dentoalveolar surgery through to complex reconstructions of the face, head and neck.
You will attend OMFS and Oral Surgery consultation and treatment clinics in our out-patient department. There are local anaesthetic minor oral surgery treatment clinics every week for DCT level, as well as the opportunity to operate with senior colleagues under both LA and GA. You will attend theatres for oncology, orthognathic, salivary, skin, trauma and dentoalveolar GA operating lists.
You will participate in an on-call rota covering both daytime and overnight shifts which is compliant with the European Working Time Directive. You will be well supported by senior cover in the form of Specialist Registrars, Specialty Grades and Consultants.
All junior staff will be supported to carry out their own audit project, and for the interested trainee there is also opportumity to be involved in writing papers. You will make presentations at local teaching sessions, and have the opportunity to present at a regional meeting also.

A wide range of surgical treatments are carried out here including oncology, orthognathic, trauma, salivary, skin, and dentoalveolar surgery.

The Trust employed core dentist is expected to participate in all aspects of the work of the department under the general direction of the Consultants, including out-patient clinics, operating sessions and the management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department with dental/maxillofacial trauma and emergencies, as well as the care of in patients varying from dentoalveolar surgery through to complex reconstructions of the face, head and neck. The Trust core dentist will be well supported by senior cover in the form of Specialist Registrars and Consultants. The Trust core dentist will participate in an on-call rota which is currently compliant with the European Working Time Directive. All junior staff will be expected to take part in medical audit.
