Applications are invited for the position of Clinical Research Fellow in the Division of Surgery at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.
We are looking to appoint enthusiastic, ambitious, and independent-thinking individuals with an interest in surgical research. Successful applicants can expect to undertake independent research supported by academic supervisors, this will encompass clinical research in upper GI and general surgery, as well as supporting relevant ongoing surgical trials.
The Department of General Surgery is an academically ambitious unit, supported by experienced academics in the form of honorary professors (Prof S Toh, Prof J Khan) and honorary senior clinical lecturers (Mr P Pucher) with an excellent track record of high impact, high volume publications. This is an existing post, previous holders have achieved multiple high impact first-author publications and been awarded higher degrees (MD(res)).
Main duties of the job
It is anticipated that an initial 1 year post may be renewed for an additional 1-2 years, with the expectation that research activity will result in the application for award of an appropriate higher degree (MSc, MRes, MD). Prior research experience is advantageous but not obligatory.
The successful applicant will be fully funded and will contribute to the general surgical on call rota (i.e. approximately 50% clinical, 50% research); there is scope to accommodate this at either SHO or SpR level depending on the applicants clinical level of experience.

This post is based in the General Surgical Department, at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. We are looking for independent thinking, ambitious, and driven individuals wishing to complete a period of research supported by senior academics in general and upper GI surgery.
The Department of General Surgery is an academically ambitious department and is looking to build further surgical research capacity while supporting current trials.
This post particularly benefits from full-time funding of a job plan that supports a roughly 50/50 split between research and clinical commitments though participation in an on-call surgical rota without routine elective commitments.
The nature of the on call rota means that this post is suitable for interested parties working at either SHO or SpR level within general surgery.
The appointee will join the General Surgery team and will be expected to participate in all facets of departmental activity. When on call you will have no elective commitments.
Emergency General Surgical On Call
Queen Alexandra Hospital is a busy emergency hospital which will see between 20-50 general surgical patients per 24 hours. Trainees are expected to take an active role in the on call both in seeing the patients as well as operating on the patients.
There are two CEPOD lists a day (one at the weekends and nights) and there are twice daily consultant ward rounds on the Surgical Assessment Unit Monday-Friday and daily consultant ward rounds Saturday and Sunday. Trainees are expected to actively participate in these.
The Surgical Assessment Unit is well staffed with Surgical Emergency Nurse Practitioners who work at the level of FY1 and are nurse prescribers.
The on call rota is a shift pattern on a 1:14 basis and consists of blocks of 3 and 4 days and nights, the hours of work being 0800-2030 days and 2000-0830 nights. Compensatory rest follows nights on call as per EWTD.
Duties
To undertake pre- and post-operative care of elective admissions, and to supervise the junior medical staff in this respect. To ensure that a daily ward round is carried out in addition to the formal rounds noted on the Consultants timetable. To assist the Consultants in the operating theatre, and to undertake surgical operating lists. The post holder will be required to participate in clinical audit according to the guidelines laid down by the Royal College of Surgeons. He/She will also be expected to complete a portfolio including operation logbook, complementing the information held on the computer. Participation in the regularly held meetings and clinical research projects is expected.
Responsibility for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the departments.
Requirement to comply with the appropriate Health and Safety Policies in force.
Management Duties
Requirement to cooperate with local management in the efficient running of services and an expectation to share with colleagues in the medical contribution to management. In addition, it should be noted that a system of Clinical Directorship is in operation and close liaison with appropriate colleagues will be required.
Requirement to work within the financial and other restraints decided upon by the Trust. Additional expenses of any kind will not be committed without the approval of the appropriate manager/budget holder.
Subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service an expectation to observe policies and procedures of the Trust drawn up in consultation with the profession where they involve clinical matters.
Pursuit of the local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures in the management of employees of the Trust.
Study Leave
Up to 15 days internal and 15 days external, subject to national and local policies, will be allowed.
