We are looking to appoint
to the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Queen Alexandra
Hospital, Portsmouth, which is a large acute hospital caring for a population
of over 650,000. You will be involved in
ward based clinical work and out-patient clinic activity, and there will be an
opportunity for training in basic endoscopy.

post-graduate education working with three universities (Southampton,

Main duties of the job
Duties are detailed in a rota, including:
Participation in the registrars on-call rota for
general medicine (shifts limited to 13 hours, 7 spells per annum of 3 or 4
nights with days-off in lieu; daytime/evening on-call approx 1/fortnight;
weekend day shifts approx 1 in 7).
The Gastroenterology Specialist Registrars are responsible for the day
to day running of the Gastroenterology Ward and outlying patients. This involves registrar led ward rounds and
supporting juniors on the wards. They
are also responsible for reviewing ward referrals to gastroenterology from
other specialities, one or two afternoons per week.
There will be opportunities to undertake outpatient clinics under the
supervision of a Consultant and for training in basic diagnostic endoscopy.

This is an
opportunity for a post MRCP trainee with an interest in Gastroenterology or a
candidate with previous Gastroenterology or Endoscopy registrar experience.
The
Gastroenterology ward comprises 36 beds on C5 Ward with a small number of
specialty patients on outlying wards.
The number of patients per team typically varies between 20-30.
This is a fully equipped endoscopy unit with facilities for Upper GI
Endoscopy, Colonoscopy and ERCP including availability of x-ray screening. In
addition there is an Oesophageal Laboratory with Manometry and 24 Hr pH.
Currently around 16,500 procedures are performed each year.
The department has
an enthusiastic air of innovation, a wide interest in teaching, numerous
research activities and believes strongly in supporting the welfare and
professional development of its staff. The department has close links with the
Universities of Southampton and Portsmouth.
Previous experience in Gastroenterology is essential and experience of
General Medicine would be advantageous. Although these posts are not recognised
for training the postholders will receive the same level of high quality
teaching, training and educational supervision as their colleagues in
recognised posts. All candidates should be fully registered with the GMC before
