Job summary

In Diagnostic Imaging we are delighted offer a work-based learning route for individuals wishing to train as a Diagnostic Radiographer, whilst being in full time employment. This role provides the opportunity to be employed whilst gaining practical experience as well as studying for a Degree or Masters in Radiography with the University of Exeter.

This post is a 3-year fixed term training contract (2 years for MSc), and on successful qualification and registration with the HCPC you will be appointed to a Band 5 Radiographer role. Final acceptance into the Apprentice Radiographer post will be dependent on being accepted onto the degree by Exeter University and meeting the apprentice eligibility rules for funding. The start date for the post is March 2024. You must be able to commit to attending all 3 block study sessions per year at the University of Exeter, dates to be confirmed at interview. Main duties of the job

As an employee of Portsmouth Hospitals you will remain contracted for, and be paid full time, but a minimum of 20% of your working hours will be devoted to off the job training (formal study), whilst the remainder of time will be spent on the job developing the key skills you need for the role and learning from highly experienced colleagues. You will be fully supported during your training and will have a workplace mentor who will meet with you regularly and ensure you are making the right progress towards the qualification.

You will learn to conduct and complete examinations across a range of general radiography, upon a range of patient types both as an autonomous practitioner and as part of a multi professional team, in a manner that meets professional, departmental and legal standards and requirements.

You will treat patients with understanding and care, respecting their privacy and dignity to provide a caring and confidential service.

The role is based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, but it is a requirement to travel to other community sites such as Gosport, Fareham and Petersfield as part of the role. As an apprentice you will work a variety of shifts including evenings, weekends and occasional nights. On qualification this commitment to out of hours working will continue as a B5 radiographer, and you will join one of the out of hours rotas.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To complete a 2 or 3 year University led BSc/MSc Diagnostic Imaging Apprenticeship and to obtain HCPC registration in order to be able to move to a Band 5 radiographer post.
  • To develop the knowledge and skills required of a Diagnostic Radiographer as listed in the job description.
  • To attend the mandatory block academic attendance at the selected Higher Education Institute (HEI) likely to be 5 days per block, 1-3 per annum.
  • To engage in the mandatory minimum 20% off the job directed and self-directed study, either locally at the apprenticeship placement or at a Trust hub.
  • To engage with the learning, clinical training and portfolio activities, and discussions with named mentors and visiting HEI Assessor.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical

To learn and undertake, under suitable supervision, all the radiographic techniques outlined in the apprenticeship program.

To support and assist the radiographers to contribute to the safe and efficient running of the radiology department.

To learn to conduct and complete examinations across a range of general radiography, upon a range of patient types both as an autonomous practitioner and as part of a multi professional team, in a manner that meets professional, departmental and legal standards and requirements.

To learn to independently assess each patient and adapt radiographic technique according to the needs of the patient.

To learn to check finished radiographs against accepted diagnostic standards, including patient details and to act appropriately according to findings.

To be able to use the departmental radiology information computer system to register patients, to check results and appointments.

To be able to accurately use CR, DR and PACS to a standard that allows advanced use and basic troubleshooting.

To relate to all manner of patients with understanding and care, respecting their privacy and dignity to provide a caring and confidential service.

Participation in one of the out of hours rotas as required.

To be competent in the use of all the X-ray equipment and to report all equipment faults to the radiographer in charge.

To undertake the departmental and Trust induction programme.

To adhere to all Trust policies including the Health and Safety Regulations; COSHH Regulations; the Data Protection Act.

To comply with all radiation protection policies such as IR(ME)R the Code of Practice for the Protection of Persons against Ionising Radiations arising from Medical and Dental use.

To observe all manual handling criteria when: - moving patients from waiting areas into the x-ray rooms; transferring patients on and off the X-ray table;positioning patients into the correct radiographic position;moving mobile X-ray equipment.

To be aware of and participate in all Quality Control procedures within the Department, including Quality Assurance testing for image quality and equipment safety, and to help with clinical audits within the Department.

To undertake radiography at other hospitals within the trust if required.

To undertake any further relevant duties as required when requested by the Band6/7 Radiographer, Superintendent Radiographer or Radiology Manager.

To attend when required, a Major Incident procedure whether real or simulated.

Professional

  • To develop to act as an independent radiographic practitioner, meeting the standards set within the Health Professions Councils professional code of conduct upon registration.
  • To use professional discretion and experience to ensure that clinical practice is carried out correctly, professionally and within the legal framework.
  • To maintain own level of competence through continuing professional development through participation in internal and external development opportunities and to maintain a portfolio of evidence in support of CPD undertaken.
  • To undertake and participate in clinical audit and research as required and to act on the findings where possible.
  • To treat as confidential all patient information obtained in the course of this post.

Communication

To communicate effectively and appropriately, with all users of the service, across all age groups and abilities, observing confidentiality and information governance. This will include: -

  • Patients, Carers & Relatives: to explain procedures, pre and post care, to check allergies and other contra indications, follow up procedures, radiation issues; appointments.
  • Radiologists: to discuss examination techniques, results and outcomes, appointments.
  • Other Health Care Professionals: to discuss patient examinations, preparation and post procedure care, diagnostic results; radiation issues, appointments; service issues and problems.
  • Wards/Departments: on any issues involving patients; on any issue affecting the provision of the X-ray service.

Physical Effort & Working Conditions

The post holder will: -

  • Have frequent use of VDU equipment.
  • Have regular exposure to distressing or emotional situations on a daily basis e.g. caring for terminally ill or badly injured patients, giving feedback of a negative nature to trainees.
  • Have occasional exposure (few times per month) to highly distressing situations e.g. severe trauma cases, cardiac arrest, discovering cancers.
  • Have frequent exposure to body fluids e.g. blood, urine etc and infection risks and occasional exposure to fleas/lice.
  • Have occasional exposure to intoxicated, aggressive or abusive patients and relatives.
  • Have daily exposure to unpredictable workload.
  • Be required to position and manoeuvre patients and equipment on a daily basis. In any clinical situation, patients may be ambulant, in a wheelchair, or on a bed or stretcher. Transfer to an X-ray couch is necessary.
  • Movement of wheelchairs, stretchers/beds over short distances throughout the working period is required, as is the movement of heavy mobile equipment around the hospital wards and operating theatres.
  • Be able to stand for long periods of time, sometimes whilst wearing a lead apron.
