We are recruiting! Here at Portsmouth Hospital University NHS Trust, our fantastic Pharmacy team are recruiting. On top of this, our Pharmacy Dispensary team are expanding and have just moved into brand-new state of the art premises based on the QA Hospital site.

The role will be supporting the Pharmacy Distribution and Stores service lead, as well as supporting training for Pharmacy staff.

It is a truly perfect opportunity for a dynamic pharmacy technician with a NVQ Level 3 Pharmacy Services qualification; with recognized underpinning knowledge qualification or General Pharmaceutical Council recognized equivalent e.g., BTEC Pharmaceutical Sciences and a Registered Pharmacy Technician status, with at least 2 years worth of experience at Band 5. Also required will be a ACPT qualification, In post you will be able to make a significant difference and have a positive impact for patients at PHUT, working within a highly committed team delivering a fantastic service.

Main duties of the job

  • Deputise for the Dispensary Lead to support running of Distribution and Stores Pharmacy Services.
  • Support the Distribution and Stores Pharmacy lead in making sure all medication orders for the inpatient and ward based services are fulfilled in full.
  • Work with the Regional Drug Purchasing Centre in highlighting any issues with medication supply and liaising with the MDT in ensuring any issues with supply are cascaded to the relevant people.
  • Be a point of contact for any issues with the Pharmacy automated dispensing system (Robot).
  • Be a supernumerary facilitator for Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technicians (ACPT) to aide process flows within the Dispensary/Distribution and Ward Service. This will include staff that are new to our Pharmacy Services and /or are transferring and returning to work.
  • Develop and maintain a support structure, with your peers, to ensure implementation and evaluation of learning for internal process and accredited learning for pharmacy staff.

There are 2 posts, one is a full time position and a 12-month fixed term contract.

  • To develop with the section leads rotations that develop and promote all Pharmacy Technicians and assistants.
  • To lead on the development of a support structure to ensure implementation and evaluation of learning, develops Pharmacy Technicians, student technicians, trainee/new pharmacists, ACPT and assistants within Dispensary and associated areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be a supernumerary facilitator for Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technicians (ACPT) to aide process flows within the Dispensary/Distribution and Ward Service. This will include staff that are new to our Pharmacy Services and /or are transferring and returning to work.
  • Develop and maintain a support structure, with your peers, to ensure implementation and evaluation of learning for internal process and accredited learning for pharmacy staff.
  • Support Registered Pharmacy Technicians to complete ACPT course work.
  • Participate in the Supervision of staff within the Pharmacy Service and participate in dispensing as a qualified technician along with final checking as an ACPT to maintain accreditation for the needs of the service.
  • Provide information on the correct use of medicines, counselling patients and/or provide compliance aids/cards to minimise barriers to concordance and ensure that each patient has sufficient understanding of how to manage their treatment, including to-follow arrangements when necessary.
  • Work with Section Leads in the preparation and implementation of work instructions and other controlled documents, which contribute to the development and updating of the pharmacy quality system for the technical aspects of a section.
  • Investigate and respond to Safety Learning Event Reports (Datix) when needed ensuring to record and feed back anything that may require a process review. Remembering to discuss Patient and staff safety with the section leads in line with best practice and MEP.
  • Oversee and give assurance to the section leads that in-house training, rotations, study time and assessments are being performed ensuring that any issues arising are noted and actioned to achieve an effective learning outcome.
  • Line manage up to two members of Dispensary/Distribution staff to enable greater development of understanding of staff and management skills.
  • Develop and maintain an expertise and knowledge base in issues related to pharmacy practice, training and development of pharmacy staff relevant to the needs of the service and customers.
  • To encourage and support the establishment of learners and qualified staff using competency based assessment, both Formative and Summative, when needed.
