Job summary
The MRI/CT department at the Queen Alexandra hospital
is a fun, dynamic vibrant and progressive department and we currently have
vacancies for radiology department assistants who are enthusiastic and positive
with a caring attitude and a desire to help patients to join our rapidly
expanding department.
The cross sectional imaging team
are looking for passionate, self motivated
departmental asisstants to help with all aspects of patient care. Supporting the
attendance of patients from wards and the emergency department to the scanners,
assisting the radiographers with scanning and providing reassurance and confort
to patients whilst they are in or due to attend the the scanning
department. Candidates must have good
communication and organsiational skills, and be able to work as part of a team
in a physically demanding environment.
Main duties of the job
The department
has the benefit of cutting-edge CT and MRI technology and provides staff with
the exciting opportunity to work with the latest Toshiba Aquilion One CT scanner
and 3T MRI technology in a clinical setting. The department is equipped with 4
CT scanners and 3 MRI scanners with all staff encouraged to rotate through both
modalities.
As part of the CT and MRI cross sectional imaging team you will be required to:
- Transfer patients to and from wards
- Liaise with CT/MR staff regarding the workflow and throughput.
- Interact with patients, supporting them through their journeys and examinations.
- Liaise with other wards and departments
- Assist radiographers with scanning
- Input data into the radiology information system.
Experience of working in a care
environment is desirable. The department currently operates a shift
system with a 3-day working week to include weekend and night working. You will be required to work shifts and Bank
Holidays.

Clinical/Operational
-
To provide the safe transfer of patients to and from
the CT and MRI scanners
-
To assist to patients needs during transfer.
-
To assist the radiographers and Superintendent in
order to facilitate the smooth running of the scanning departments on a daily
basis.
-
Organising the daily throughput of the department in
conjunction with the radiographers by ensuring that all referrals for each day
are correct, noting any special instructions regarding patient preparation.
-
Liaising with wards to arrange the transportation of
patients to the department.
-
To assist in patient care, getting patients changed,
giving oral preparation, assisting patients in and out of the scan room and on
and off the scanner table.

To
participate in the night shift rota.
-
To assist radiographers with iv cannulation.
-
To set up the trolleys and assist the radiologists
with biopsies, drainages and any other interventional procedures.
-
To perform daily checks on the resuscitation trolley
ensuring that all equipment, and drugs are present and in date.
-
To aid the anaesthetic team with the paediatric GAs.
-
To answer the telephone and deal promptly with
enquires from patients, doctors and other hospital staff.
-
To ensure the availability of adequate supplies by
monitoring stock levels and reordering when necessary.

To be
able to use the departmental radiology information computer to register and
track patients, to check results and appointments.

To have a flexible
approach and assist generally with any other duties as requested by the
Superintendent radiographer and clinical manager. Healthcare provision takes place in a
constantly changing environment, and the RDA role will be reviewed and may be
amended from time to time to reflect the changing need of the service.

designated, controlled or supervised area within the Diagnostic Imaging
Department or the Trust.

The post holder will: -

Be involved in the continuous movement of
wheelchairs, stretchers/beds over distances throughout the working period as
required.

Be required to position and manoeuvre patients
and equipment on a daily basis. In any
clinical situation, patients may be ambulant, in a wheelchair, or on a bed or
stretcher. Transfer to an X-ray couch is
necessary.

Have frequent use of VDU equipment.
-
Have regular exposure to distressing or
emotional situations on a daily basis e.g. caring for terminally ill or badly
injured patients, giving feedback of a negative nature to trainees.

Have regular exposure to highly distressing
situations e.g. severe trauma cases, cardiac arrest, discovering cancers.

Have frequent exposure to body fluids e.g.
blood, urine etc and infection risks and occasional exposure to fleas/lice.
