Job summary
We are a small,
friendly, hardworking team looking to recruit a trainee clinical photographer.
You will have either a Degree in photography with the expectation of obtaining
a distance learning PGCert in Clinical Photography during the training period,
or previous medical photography/relevant hospital experience with an
expectation to work towards a graduate certificate in clinical photography. As this is a trainee post it falls under a
Band 5, Annex 21 salary moving up to a permanent band 5 position on successful
completion of the training period.
Within Portsmouth, we primarily provide a
clinical service to two hospital sites although we also work at other hospitals
as well. Therefore your own transport will be a requirement for this post. Following
suitable induction and training, you need to be able to work independently and
efficiently, with the ability to prioritise your own workload and manage your
time effectively. You will also require excellent communication skills with the
ability to talk to both patients and hospital staff at their level. In return
we will offer you support to grow your talents and enhance your continuing
professional development.
We also undertake PR and non-clinical
photography so all round photographic skills are a must. We are in the process
of developing a Medical Photography and Illustration video service within the
Trust, and you will be expected to be a part of this new project.
Main duties of the job
As a clinical photographer you will be able to confidently photograph patients to show their condition or disease. This may be for record, diagnostic or teaching purposes purposes. We have apurpose-builtstudio, but you will also be expected to visit wards, outpatient departments and operating theatres. As well as the Queen Alexandra site, we have a busy satellite department in Dermatology on the St Marys campus where you will be expected to work several days perweek. Becauseeach patient is unique, you will have to have an adaptable, thinking approach to each job to obtain the best results under what can be difficult circumstances and conditions.
You will sometimes have to take photographs of a distressing nature so you have to be prepared for this.
Having taken the photographs you will then be responsible for initial editing and making sure that the photographs get to the correct clinician and department in a timely manner.
Non patient photographic duties will include photographing awards and presentations, portrait photography and location photography so you will need to have versatile photographic skills. Other jobs will include liaising with our graphic designers in obtaining any photographs they might require for posters and leaflets.
Off camera, you will be expected to have a good understanding of Adobe Photoshop andInDesignin order to amend or enhance non-clinical photographs so that they are suitable for use.

Clinical

and theatre adhering to the Trust and Department guidelines and policies on
photographic standardisation and patient confidentiality.
- To undertake complex photographic procedures including
clinical trials, serial photography intra-oral photography and the photography
of surgical procedures.
- To use
specialist digital photographic software and hardware and to support the
training of others in its use.
- To
photograph potentially disturbing medical cases/patients including in
theatre, outpatient departments and in the mortuary.
- To participate in and support the research and
development activities within the Trust and for national organisations.
- To be proactive in introducing new equipment,
systems and working practices within the department.
- To ensure that all patient information relating
to their clinical images are kept up to date within the department database
ensuring that the clients have the patient images within their required deadlines,
and that the patient images are either printed or uplifted to the departments

for use in promotional material, displays, reports, training manuals and

non-clinical work is accurate and up-to-date.
- To provide a reprographic service to the Trust
by photographing hard copy or the scanning of slides and other images as
required by clients.
- To produce and/or edit scientific posters for

- To produce simple design work using specific
software as required.
- To be actively involved in the videography projects
which the department undertakes.
Training:
- To undertake a suitable Post-graduate
qualification in clinical photography.
- To undertake Trust mandatory and
statutory training.
- To maintain professional competence and be aware of
relevant technical and professional developments in photography.
General:
- To ensure suitable standards and high quality work
are set and maintained, including the developing implementing and maintaining of
quality working systems.
