Main duties of the job

Portsmouth Radiotherapy department covers a wide catchment area, covering Portsmouth, Southampton, West Sussex, and the Isle of Wight. As well as the daily routine of scanning, planning and treating patients, we also offer an On Call service at the weekends, to treat Metastatic Malignant Spinal Cord Compressions (MSCC).

With recent expansion in our Clinical Trials portfolio and advanced radiotherapy techniques, we are expanding our permanent workforce within the Pre-Treatment area. We are looking for an initiative-taking, Senior therapeutic radiographer to join our team, who is keen to progress professionally and support the implementation of SimRT once funding has been approved.With four TrueBeam 3.0 linear accelerators that includes advanced IGRT imaging such as online 4D CBCT, iCBCT and triggered imaging. There are two 6DOF couches in use for Head and neck, upper GI and Lung SABR patients, alongside abdomen compression immobilisation. Pre-treatment has a wide-bore Siemens GO-SIM CT scanner, Brachytherapy, orthovoltage and on-treatment review services. Our service is linked together using ARIA V15.L6 and stays a paperless department.

Recently we increased our SABR treatment modalities for oligometastases and prostate cancer via the PACE Nodes trial. For planning and dosimetry, we moved to Raystation planning system and routinely use AI auto-contouring software to ensure contour efficiency.

The committee has helped drive the implementation of flexible working across the whole department as we now offer 7.5 hr or 9.5 hr shifts over 3/4/5 days per week. Similarly, the team have ended the Covid backlog and routinely achieving the 31-day cancer standard for our patients.

There are three trained consultant radiographers in Breast/urology/palliative radiotherapy, and we are developing new ACP opportunities. With four apprentice radiographer undergraduate and postgraduate roles in post and recently invested in enhances practice roles supporting progression from graduate all the way to consultant radiographer or lead radiographer.
