Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust

Consultant Obstetrician with an interest in High-Risk Pregnancy

The closing date is 08 April 2026

Job summary

This post is currently pending Royal college approval.

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust seeks to appoint a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join its dynamic and ambitious team. This is a replacement post due to retirement. The Trust wishes to appoint an applicant who holds a certificate of completion of specialist O&G training. Experience in advanced Obstetric ultrasound would be an advantage. A decision about their eligibility for the post will be taken by the short-listing panel once the qualifications of the field of applicants are established.

The successful candidate will join a large cohesive team of 24 consultants, providing general and specialised obstetrics and gynaecology services to the population of East Hampshire and neighbouring areas. The post will be based at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. The job plan will initially be based on ten programmed activities and will include participation in the obstetrics and gynaecology on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

The remit of the post holder will be to support specialised Obstetric services alongside the provision of general obstetric and gynaecology services. The appointee will be responsible for the running of the Rainbow clinic a specially commissioned ultrasound-based service for women who have suffered previous stillbirth, neonatal death or late termination for fetal reasons. There will also be a growth scan clinic on alternate weeks, and opportunity to support the Multiple Birth and Preterm Clinics.

The post-holder will be expected to have a fortnightly elective Caesarean section list in their job plan to facilitate safe delivery of high-risk cases, as well as a fortnightly half day session in the Maternity Assessment Unit reviewing pregnant people presenting to the service acutely. We are proud of our commitment to Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching across all specialities, so qualifications and experience in teaching would be welcome.
