The Vascular Assessment Unit at Portsmouth are excited to expand our current team with the appointment of a Band 7 Vascular Scientist (part-time 0.7 WTE 26.25 hours per week). The successful candidate will ideally have full AVS accreditation with the College and Society for Clinical Vascular Science, however if you are an experienced candidate working towards this qualification or are nearing completion of the STP training scheme, we would welcome your application (Annex 21 arrangement dependent on experience until SVT Accreditation achieved with our full support to enable this).

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to carry out and independently report the full range of investigations, including carotid artery Duplex, upper and lower limb arterial and venous Duplex, EVAR & bypass graft surveillance, ABPI, pre- operative marking, and pre- and post- fistula assessments. Protected non-clinical time is allocated for teaching, research, service improvement, audit and professional development.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Applicants must have AVS (Full Accreditation with Society of Vascular Technology for Great Britain and Ireland - requiring 3-4 years post graduate study, training and experience of Vascular Ultrasound) or equivalent qualification.
  • Applicants must have an honours degree or equivalent in Medical, Biological or Physical Sciences (1st or 2.1)

Desirable

  • MSc in Medical or Physical Science
  • Physics A level or equivalent
  • HCPC Registration

Experience

Essential

  • Advanced knowledge and experience of Vascular Ultrasound
  • Highly developed physical skills in performing highly complex Vascular Ultrasound scans with the highest levels of precision, speed and accuracy.
  • Highly developed reporting skills for Vascular Ultrasound scans.
  • Advanced analytical skills in problem solving.
  • Highly developed communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to communicate complex results to clinical colleagues, including scientific and technical interpretation of complex anatomy and physiology.
  • Highly developed skills in working with advanced complex and expensive equipment.
  • Physically able to move heavy equipment, assist with transfer of patients, and maintain awkward scanning positions with limited scope for movement in order to obtain adequate images.
  • Able to deal with distressing circumstances and frequently unpleasant working conditions.
  • Able to sensitively impart bad news, including test results, to patients.
  • Highly effective at making appropriate decisions and recommendations regarding referral of patients for further tests.
  • Highly effective at organising work of self and others, prioritising work according to service demands, competing pressures and time scales.
