Wessex Kidney Centre, Portsmouth Hospital University NHS Trust are excited to offer you the opportunity to join our dynamic team to support inpatient acute renal care in Portsmouth and outpatient nephrology services in West Sussex and Hampshire.

This advertisement is for a fixed term 21-month WTE post working in Wessex Kidney Centre covering outpatient services in the West Sussex area and inpatient work in Portsmouth Hospital

Main duties of the job

The post will cover outpatient clinics (nephrology, dialysis and long-term transplant follow up) for patients in the West Sussex area. The post holder will form part of the home haemodialysis nephrology team covering clinics in Fareham and will also oversee an established virtual clinic for chronic kidney disease patients on a digital platform. Nephrology inpatient and on call services will be at Portsmouth Hospital supporting a team of 9 other nephrologists. The postholder will have a regular nephrology procedure list and be expected to contribute to education and training and will work with a variety of multidisciplinary teams.

About us

The Wessex Kidney Centre is a busy renal unit with a catchment area of 2.4 million people and covering all aspects of nephrology, dialysis, and transplantation. It has a large home dialysis program (both Peritoneal dialysis and home haemodialysis), 835 patients on dialysis and carries out over 100 transplants per year.

Clinical Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a team of nephrologists delivering comprehensive renal care across a wide geographical footprint. Responsibilities include:

  • Outpatient management of nephrology, dialysis, and chronic transplant patients at satellite units in Bognor Regis and Fareham.
  • Inpatient nephrology and acute kidney injury (AKI) care at Portsmouth Hospitals, with 2-week ward cover every 10 weeks.
  • Participation in a 1:10 on-call rota, including weekends.
  • Oversight of virtual clinics for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients via digital platforms.
  • Joint responsibility for renal replacement therapy (RRT) clinics at satellite dialysis unit.
  • Home haemodialysis clinics supporting one of the UKs largest home dialysis populations.

  • Supervision and teaching of resident doctors in procedural skills and clinical practice.

Qualifications

Essential

  • - Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • - CCT in Nephrology (or within the next 6 months) and MRCP

Desirable

  • - Higher degree

Experience

  • - Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months) or CESR
  • - Specialist Training in Nephrology to the level of CCT completion.

Desirable

  • - Procedural competency in tunnelled catheter insertion, renal biopsy (native and transplant), PD catheter insertion

Additional criteria

Essential

  • <ul><li>Demonstrable clinical and technical skills to provide a consultant service in nephrology and nephrological emergencies</li><li>Understanding of clinical risk management</li></ul>

Desirable

  • <ul><li>Ability to perform, supervise and teach native and transplant renal biopsy (ultrasound-guided), and ultrasound-guided central venous cannulation including tunnelling</li></ul>
