Medical Physics Technologist

Band 5 - £29,969 to £36,483 per annum

Full-time - 37.5 hours per week

Contract Type: Permanent

The Radiological Sciences Group in the Portsmouth Medical Physics department is seeking to appoint a technologist to join a friendly team that provides radiation safety expertise to clinical departments who use x-rays and other sources of radiation to image and treat patients. The post is based at Queen Alexandra hospital, Portsmouth and there will be some travel to other hospitals/centres.

Main duties of the job

You will involve undertaking safety and performance testing across a wide range of X-ray imaging equipment, audit of patient radiation dose using hospital computer systems and other technical and administration tasks.

The Medical Physics department in Portsmouth is an experienced and accredited training centre. We are looking for you to have a minimum of two years experience working as a Medical Physics Technician, or relevant equivalent experience in a related field. If you do not have suitable experience but possess appropriate qualifications, we could offer you a Band 4 Trainee Medical Physics technician.

  • Provide technical support to a number of areas within the section and associated departments. This role demands skills performance to ensure accuracy and patient safety, and work in a broad range of specialised, complex, routine and non-routine technical work.
  • Manage own workload and provide technical support for the following areas: Specific areas of responsibility are in:
    • radiological performance testing
    • radiation measurement and equipment calibration
    • patient dosimetry
  • Act as an operator under IRMER 2017 regulations and contribute to the training of junior technicians and trainee scientists.
  • Work closely with state registered clinical scientists to achieve coordinated delivery of specialised scientific and technical services that demand skilled performance to ensure accuracy and patient safety.

    Qualifications

    • Level 3 qualifications, A-Levels in a science or maths subject or equivalent

    Desirable

    • You should have qualifications in Maths or Science subjects (preferably Physics) at education level 3 or higher. A degree in Physics or other scientific subject would be desirable. If you do not have a degree but wish to undertake further academic study for career development, we would support enrolment on the Radiation Physics NHS Healthcare Science Practitioner Training Programme leading to a BSc (Hons) degree and professional qualification. This would be funded through the employers apprenticeship scheme (subject to you meeting all criteria).
