Portsmouth Hospital Trust is one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the country treating over half a million patients each year. Our purpose-built Haematology-Oncology Centre is situated in Queen Alexandra Hospital. Combined Haematology/ Oncology (CHOC) is a 46-bed unit on one floor across 3 wards (F5, F6 and F7). Haematology-Oncology Day Unit (HODU) is staffed by 13 full and part-time trained chemotherapy nurses and treat approximately 80 - 90 patients per day.

Main duties of the job

This is a full-time Specialty Staff Grade (CT 3 +) post in the Acute Oncology Service (AOS). The appointee will work together with 5 + Band 6 Acute Oncology Practitioner Nurses and Medical Oncology ST3+ trainees at Acute Oncology admission Bay for attachments of 12 months covering a range of tumour types. The post holder will be required to demonstrate that they have experience in oncological management, and preferably will have MRCP (non compulsory) or equivalent. The post may be attractive to a candidate who have completed Foundation and Core Medical competencies (or equivalent) and wish to gain further experience in Medical Oncology before pursing ST3 training.

The post holder will be given a job plan that covers the Acute Oncology Service as well as gaining clinic experience with the Medical Oncology team, further aiding application ability for ST3 training

Although this is a non-training post, the successful candidate will be assigned a consultant educational supervisor and will be encouraged to maintain an educational portfolio with appropriate assessments to their level of experience. There are regular educational, clinical governance and departmental meetings, as well as Wessex Regional Oncology study days. The department is committed to clinical research with participation in clinical trials in all major tumour sub-sites. There are also a wide range of opportunities to participate in clinical audit and quality improvement projects.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide Registrar level day to day care for Acute Oncology admission, together with AOS NPs.
  • Attend Medical Oncology Educational Seminars and lunch on Fridays.
  • Participate in the Outreach covering of Day unit in emergency, for Day unit in set SOPs.
  • Support the Acute Oncology Nurse Practitioners to complete teams goals for patients.
  • Acute Oncology shifts are 8 hours and run between service hours currently 8am and 6pm.
  • Complete all admission compliance for patients in the Acute Oncology Service that will be admitted to the CHOC wards.
  • Participation in Audits for Acute Admission or new Policy changes.
  • Provision of clinical support to oncology Day procedures such as Ascites Drain, or Chest drains.
  • Co-ordinate and implement specialist care for patients with a new diagnosis of cancer or complications of cancer, initiate rapid referral to relevant oncology sub-site team and/or palliative care team.
  • Supervise and assist Acute Oncology Team
  • Triage New presentation of Cancer unknown primary to CUP team.
  • Participate in GP Calls for advice.
  • Ensure training compliance and clinical responsibilities are adhered to
  • Management and Leadership roles through participation in Chemotherapy Governance Group, Research Trial Protocol meetings, monthly Mortality/ Morbidity meetings
