Wessex Kidney Centre has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Healthcare Support Worker to join our team at Fareham Dialysis Unit. Based in the grounds of Fareham Community Hospitals, this nurse led satellite unit provides for 150 Dialysis dependant patients.
As part of a team working alongside other professionals, you will witness first hand what a positive impact you can have on our patients and their lives. You will need to be organised, adaptable, resilient and hardworking. Enhanced training will be offered with the opportunity to gain further competencies with our Wessex Kidney Centre Development programme.

Main duties of the job
- Under the supervision of registered healthcare professionals, you will be working independently and assisting the team with the provision of high standard clinical care for a defined group of patients, working within your sphere of competence.
- Actively promote safe and effective working practices to prevent harm to the patients in your care.
- Ensure patient safety is maintained and patient experience is positive by treating all patients, relatives and colleagues with respect, dignity and courtesy in accordance with Trust values.
- Communicating and working with the multidisciplinary team to improve quality of care
- Assist in the assessment of patients undergoing Haemodialysis
- Demonstrate an understanding for the appropriate monitoring and intervention of dialysis complications.
- Have the underpinning knowledge required in gaining access for dialysis.
- Assist with administrative tasks, including both ordering and overseeing stock levels.
- To act within your sphere of competence, seeking assistance/advice when outside job role scope. This post covers all areas within the WKC, but the base is in Fareham Dialysis Unit. 25 analysis stations covering 2/3 shifts per day over a 6-day period.
- Have an underpinning knowledge of the basic principles of Haemodialysis.

Patient Safety, Patient Experience and Use of Resources
- Ensure all possible steps are taken to safeguard the welfare, safety and security of patients, visitors and staff in accordance with Trust policies.
- Meet the needs of a specified group of patients under the direction of a registered healthcare professional. Acting within your sphere of competence at all times as determined by the minimum skill set for HCSWs.
- Provide care to patients to maintain their personal hygiene and physical comfort, ensuring that their privacy and dignity is maintained at all times. Work in partnership with patients to respect their rights and choices.
- Recognise patient's needs and changing condition and respond appropriately and effectively. Assist in the emergency resuscitation of patients as per Portsmouth Hospitals Resuscitation Policy.
- Assist the patient in all activities of daily
- Maintain dignity, comfort, and sensitivity of patients and their relatives during end of life care.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and ensure the following of Trust Policy regarding Infection Control and Prevention.
- Report adverse incidents in accordance with Trust policy.
- Record and report information ono patient administration systems in written and electronic format, including assisting generic admin duties to assist the team.
- Promote and demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication at all times with patients, relatives and colleagues recognising the need for tact, consideration and confidentiality.
- Requirement to work in environment with unpleasant working conditions e.g. bodily fluids.
- Assist in the assessment and care of patients undergoing haemodialysis.
- To maintain safe practice in a safe environment, participating in the development of procedures to minimise the risks associated with the use of hazardous chemicals and exposure to blood inherent in the dialysis process.

- To maintain a high degree of coordination and dexterity when cannulating access for dialysis.
- Ability to use the dialysis machines required to dialyse patients. To be able to prepare, use and clean said equipment.
