Job summary

Do you want to work in an innovative team, which is shaping the way therapy services are provided at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth? We have a wonderful opportunity for you to work as a Therapy Associate Practitioner within the Critical Care Therapy team. You will work with qualified Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and other therapy support staff, led by a Team Lead Physiotherapist.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will assist in the delivery of the Therapy Service to patients in Critical Care across Elective and Trauma Services settings. You will carry out delegated duties to ensure a patient centred service. You will supervise and instruct patients/clients in activities relating to their treatment programme. You will have a professional but warm approach and we will provide support and training to enable you to perform to your fullest.

  • To undertake specific skilled support work to aid the rehabilitation of patients who are critically ill this includes medical, surgical and neuro patients.
  • To accept patients referred by a physiotherapist or at referral source according to specific protocols. Treat patients according to set treatment protocols monitoring patient progression, modifying, and progressing patient treatment programmes as required and discharging patients or referring back to physiotherapist when goals have been achieved. Work unsupervised reporting back patient progress and informing physiotherapist of any problems.
  • Be responsible for non-professional duties in the provision of physiotherapy services within the designated clinical team including record keeping and monitoring of activity.
  • Monitor and order stock, mobility aids, supplies for department or team. Assess and prescribe mobility and ADL equipment as required.

Job responsibilities

  • To assist in information gathering, e.g. initial interviews and admin processes concerning referred patients according to own competency and in line with standards of practice and policies and procedures for the designated team.
  • To undertake treatment as agreed by supervising Therapist and assist the Therapist in identifying problems and need for further assessment.
  • To ensure patients/carers are an integral part of treatment planning and goal setting.
  • To provide rehabilitation interventions as part of a specific patient treatment plan agreed and documented following an assessment by a physiotherapist. Working without direct supervision of a physiotherapist.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of physiotherapy concepts underpinning the prescribed treatment programmes to enable you to instruct, advise & guide patients. To make the appropriate adjustments independently and be able to communicate any changes to patients and prescribing staff. This may include areas of work requiring physical effort or intense concentration, with regard to risk, health & safety.
  • Use skills of tact, diplomacy and gentle persuasion to enhance patients compliance to enable an active part in their own rehabilitation programme. This may involve treating patients with communication impairment, deafness or other sensory impairment, dementia, or where English is not the first language.
  • Demonstrate and issue appropriate equipment to meet patients requirements.
  • To report relevant information to supervising Therapist and maintain accurate records, as per Therapy Standards of practice.
  • Take part in procedures to ensure the smooth running of the department such as patient registration, patient liaison reporting and recording, data collection, maintenance of equipment and stock.
  • To adhere to the national and local manual handling guidelines.
  • Potential to work an occasional weekend working pattern with TOIL and daytime shift patterns.
  • You will be required to work some bank holidays
