Job summary

This opportunity gives newly qualified as well as more experienced speech and language therapists a great introduction to the broad range of NHS clinical services. Working with children and families to provide a Speech & Language Therapy into the community locations where children live and attend school. Following successful completion of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) NQP Competency Framework, you will work as an autonomous practitioner, in partnership with parents, school staff, and children, and in liaison with other healthcare staff, to deliver integrated specialised packages of care to children with a broad range of speech, language communication and feeding difficulties. Clinical supervision from other members of the team will be available to discuss cases and share ideas. You will also gain experience in order to train students, other healthcare professionals and staff from other agencies who work with children with speech and language difficulties, initially with support from an experienced colleague. Your access to clinical expertise and clinical supervision, training and development opportunities ensures your experience and skills will develop at pace, opening opportunities for career development.

Main duties of the job

To work in a variety of settings including schools, nursery's, homes and clinics to deliver high quality speech and language therapy assessment and therapeutic interventions.

To consult with colleagues in education. and to involve parents/ carers at every stage of the child or young persons care.

Work with colleagues and other healthcare professionals in developing and providing an effective and efficient service to children and their families.

To support others to understand the speech, language and communication needs of children and to provide interventions, recommendations and advice which follows an evidence base to improve children and young peoples outcomes.

To contribute to the Education Health Care Planning process as needed in consultation with parents, carers and young people.

To promote co production in the development of the service, in creating person centred care plans and in delivering high quality care.

About us

We have been working with other local NHS Trusts to create a new organisation, bringing together all community, mental health and learning disability services from across Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Subject to approvals, the aim is for the new Trust to be formed by July 2024.Project Fusion is the name for the programme to create the new combined NHS Foundation Trust. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust will be bringing the services into a single organisation will result in more consistent care, more equitable access to services irrespective of postcode, and a more sustainable workforce and services. The new organisation will operate locally to ensure services can best meet the needs of different communities.The new Trust will be comprised of all the services currently provided by Solent NHS Trust and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, the community, mental health and learning disability services provided by Isle of Wight NHS Trust and child and adolescent mental health services delivered in parts of Hampshire by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.Colleagues will transfer to the new organisation under Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) -- known as TUPE on 1st July 2024. TUPE is a legal process to ensure you transfer out of one organisation and into another, maintaining the terms and conditions of your employment.

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • A valid up to date RCSLT registration
  • A valid up to date HCPC Licence to Practice

Desirable

  • Post-graduate dysphagia qualification

Experience

  • Experience of a range of paediatric speech and language disorders and delay
  • Excellent interpersonal skills -- including observation, listening and empathy skills
  • Highly developed non-verbal communication skills
  • Highly developed analytical and reflection skills
  • Good auditory discrimination skills and an ability to transcribe speech phonetically
  • Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills
  • Ability to maintain intense concentration for prolonged periods, simultaneously analysing auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of a child's communication as required on a daily basis as an integral part of assessment and treatment
  • Ability to be a good team member
  • Excellent organisational skills

  • Understanding of national and local strategies, policies and procedures across Health and Education and their local implementation or application
