Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated to join our friendly and experienced Special School Nursing Team. We provide Specialist School Nursing to nine Special Schools across the Southampton, Hampshire, IOW and Portsmouth and we are looking to recruit Bank Special School Nurse to work across Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth and IOW.

The schools we work with provide education to children and young people who have Special Educational Needs and complex health conditions. The Special School Nursing team works collaboratively with children, families, school staff and the wider multi-disciplinary team within the education setting to ensure a supportive and caring learning environment. The nursing team are responsible for ensuring the health needs of the children are met using a family centered approach to assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the health needs of the children within a specialist education provision. The role will include teaching and training of school staff, creating care plans and supervision of delegated skills including children and young people with a range of complex care, epilepsy and seizure management, enteral feeding, and tracheostomy.

The candidate must hold either a registration as a Children's or Learning Disability Nurse with recent experience of working with children and people with learning disabilities. Previous experience of special school nursing would be desirable.

Main duties of the job

*Have a good understanding and/or experience of children with Profound and Multiple Learning disabilities (PMLD) and Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD).

*Support the senior nurses by carrying out specific health care assessments and/or interventions.

*Work in partnership with families and the multi-disciplinary team to provide care in appropriate settings to maximise life opportunities for the child or young person.

*Provide essential training (and updates) to parents and school staff for all delegated tasks

*Provide guidance, advice and support to schools regarding management of pupils with complex health needs (See person specification)

*Participate in the administration of medicines in accordance with Service/Trust guidelines and policies

*Advise on best practice guidance regarding medicines management, medicines waste disposal and medicines administration techniques.

*Create referrals to other professionals where required which includes continence service, CPMS, Respite centres & wider allied health professionals (AHP's)

*Provide routine monitoring of children on the caseload as necessary including height, weight, and clinical observations as dictated by the Childs health needs both within the child's home and special school setting.

*Support and contribute to CPMS and other community review clinics and meetings

*Signpost families to other services and resources as required, supporting their child's needs.
