We are offering a fantastic opportunity for a Dental Therapist to join a well-established Special Care and Paediatric Service in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Dental Therapist to work within The Special Care Dental setting. This role can be as challenging as it is rewarding and will provide the incumbent post holder with the potential to further their skills utilising the full range of treatments in the Dental Therapist remit, whilst also providing the opportunity to train in inhalation sedation and participate in the Dental Therapist Mentorship Scheme linked to the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy.
Applications are invited from caring and enthusiastic dental therapists for this post which will be based in the Special Care dental clinic within the Cowes Community Clinic. The post holder will deliver dental care and advice to adult and paediatric patients accessing the Special Care Dental Service as prescribed by a dentist within the service. Previous experience of working within a Community Dental Service environment will be an advantage but not essential, and this role may require you to work in other Solent Special Care Dental clinics at times.
Main duties of the job
Clinical treatment
- Treatment of adults and children in Dental Service clinics and domiciliary settings without direct supervision.
- Carry out prescribed treatment plans; assessing, implementing and evaluating clinical care of patients, working within Service protocols and procedures and following professional guidelines. Provide advice on oral hygiene and peri-operative care; and provide personal care associated with surgical procedures.
- Provide oral health education interventions and support in clinical settings.
- Provide lifestyle behaviour change brief interventions and support.
- Operate specialist dental equipment and carry out radiography and process radiographs.
- Participate in Conscious Sedation procedures and special care clinics as required.
Dental Therapy specific procedures
Monitor and record of disease, scaling and polishing, apply topical fluoride and fissure sealants, restore deciduous and permanent teeth, root canal therapies in deciduous teeth, place pre-formed metal crowns, administer of local infiltration and nerve block analgesia, extract deciduous teeth, treat emergencies - temporary replacements of fillings and crowns, take of impressions, take and process of radiographs, treat patients under conscious sedation administered by dental officer, certify and discharge patient as dentally fit at completion of treatment plan.
