Job summary
This position is normally occupied by a Dental Core Trainee and so would suit a dentist who has completed Foundation or Dental Core One Training or who wishes to re-enter NHS training pathways. Alongside the personal patient commitment of a Band A Dental Officer, the successful candidate would be allocated an Educational Supervisor, clinical supervisors and would be supported to produce a portfolio to be presented for the National Certificate of Dental Core Training by Equivalence: National Certificate of Dental Core Equivalence (NCDCE) - COPDEND
Attendance at up to 6 local Thames Valley & Wessex DCT Study days is permitted and in house training alongside our Joint Dental Foundation and Core Trainees.
If satisfactory clinical progress is made, then training in Inhalation Sedation would be undertaken and the clinician would be able to attend General anaesthetic sessions as an observer, progressing to treating clinician when deemed appropriate.
Service Summary
The Special Care Dental Service provides preventive care and dental treatment for those with additional needs who cannot receive care in a general dental setting. This includes adults and children with a physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical, social impairment or disability and those who require specialist occasional care due to medical, physical or behavioural difficulties. Care will mainly be provided in clinic locations but may also be provided in hospital and domiciliary settings where appropriate.
Main duties of the job
Patient examination and diagnosisUndertake thorough examination of patients and provide a Dental Care Assessment.
Treatment planning and patient managementPlan and manage where there are complex medical co-morbidities or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and/or carers to resolve complex patient management issues. Clinical duties in relation to comprehensive dental screening, survey and treatment services, including emergency treatment, for patients requiring Special Care Dentistry and Specialist Occasional Care. This may of necessity vary with time to meet changing needs. Dental care may be provided from a variety of clinic premises, including mobile clinics, and may involve domiciliary visits where appropriate. It is normal for this post to treat patients in wheelchairs using the wheelchair recliner, including bariatric patients, and to be able to use hoists.
Health promotion and disease prevention
Plan, develop, implement and evaluate programmes to prevent disease and promote health in target groups within the population. Promote oral health and preventive dental care liaising with the Oral Health Promotion Team and assisting in planning and provision of oral health promotion programmes as required. Provision of advice on oral hygiene and peri-operative care and personal care associated with dental procedures. Provision of lifestyle behaviour change, brief interventions and support (e.g. Smoking Cessation).
