Main duties of the job
Participate in clinical and surgical procedures, providing chaperone and clinical support to Dental Officer and Dental Therapist. Ensure the smooth running of clinics and provide cover in other areas of the service in case of staff leave or absence, often at short notice.
Provide advice on oral hygiene and peri-operative care; and provide personal care associated with surgical procedures.
Operate specialist dental equipment as prescribed by Dental Officer and Dental Therapist. Ensure all medical devices have had the routine daily/weekly monthly checks completed and documented prior to use.
Carry out routine daily weekly and monthly checks to ensure emergency drugs and resuscitation equipment is in date and working. Ensure all documentation has been completed.
Ensure the dental environment is kept clean and free of clutter, ensuring dental materials are in date, stocks replenished and medicines are stored in accordance with Trust Policy.

Where an additional post registration qualification are held, working with the Specialist Lead Dental Nurses to ensure the skills and knowledge are maintained through continuing practice and CPD, and that the GDCs Scope of Practice is adhered to.
Certificate in Dental Radiograph; take exposure and process radiographs, as prescribed by the dental officer or therapist, within the current legislation. Undertakes routine quality assurance.
Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing; Working as the second appropriate person, assisting in the care of patients, carrying out equipment safety checks, recording and checking controlled drugs prior to signature by the Dental Officer
Certificate in Topical Fluoride Application; Competently apply topical fluoride to adult and child patients from a prescription of a dental officer
Certificate Special Care Dental Nursing: Support the improvement of oral health of individuals and groups in society, who have a physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical, emotional or social impairment or disability.
Certificate in Oral Health Education; Support the promotion of Oral Health education to their patients.
Certificate of Competency in Impression Taking; competently take impressions of patients to the prescription of a dentist.
Mentorship; Provide support and mentoring for apprentice dental nurses and newly qualified dental nurses.
Decontamination
Decontaminate, prepare and store equipment and instruments in accordance with the HTM01-05 and Trust Infection Prevention and Control Standards. Responsible for completing user checks to include daily/weekly maintenance of specialist decontamination and sterilising equipment, completing and retaining accurate records. Maintain treatment area to high standard ensuring self and other staff follow laid down infection control procedures.
Equipment
Check, maintain and carry out user servicing of specialist dental surgery and radiographic equipment. Equipment is to be maintained in accordance with the manufacturers recommendation and in accordance with HTM 01-05 / Medical Devices Regulations 2002. Defective equipment is to be reported appropriately and made safe without delay in accordance with Trust procedures. New and replacement equipment is not used until it has been commissioned in accordance with Trust policy and relevant training provided.
Operate monitoring and sedation/anaesthesia equipment, ensuring maintenance and servicing in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. Check, maintain and carry out user servicing of specialist sedation, dental surgery and radiographic equipment. Equipment is to be maintained in accordance with Trust policy.
Communication
- Communicate with Dental Laboratories, re prosthetic devices, and other health care professionals regarding patient care.
- Maintain appropriate records ensuring compliance with the agreed record keeping systems of the Trust, including completion of FP17.
- Obtain informed consent where appropriate and document in accordance with Trust procedures.
- Obtain sensitive personal, social and medical information, often of a complex nature; and in situations where interpreters may be necessary or where patients have learning and communication difficulties. It will be necessary to explain medical and dental information in everyday language and terms so that interpreters can translate for patients.
- Receive patients referred to the Dental Service (including but not restricted to patients with severe phobias, highly emotionally disturbed, patients with special needs and those in severe pain seeking emergency care). Cope with highly emotive and sometimes frequent hostile interactions with distressed patients and members of the public.
Knowledge, Education and Training
Training
- Undertake training and mentoring of staff and other groups as required. Induct new members of staff. Assist with outreach training for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Responsible for recording competencies and training on medical devices within specialty area and maintaining records.
Audit and QA
Undertake collection of data for audit activities and Quality Assurance initiatives. Help develop audits and participate in Clinical Audit for analysis and processing of data. Participate in Clinical Governance / Supervision and Peer Review in compliance with General Dental Council and Trust requirements, including annual individual performance reviews.

- Comply with Trust arrangements for mandatory/essential training and Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Take responsibility for CPD to meet registration requirements of General Dental Council.
