Locally Employed Doctor (Higher) in Cardiac Surgery - QEHB

Job summary

This is new appointment for a candidate seeking to increase their experience in adult cardiac surgery by providing service commitment while learning non-operative and operative skills pertaining to both these aspects of the cardiac surgical service at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham (QEHB).

Cardiac surgery services at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust site have been provided since the 1950s, all at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site. The unit is on track to perform approximately 600 conventional open-heart procedures, 30-40 heart transplants, 25-30 lung transplants, 10-15 durable implantable left ventricular assist devices (HeartMate 3) and 30-50 temporary mechanical circular support (MCS) episodes per year. It also performs combined heart-lung, heart liver and lung liver transplants when required.

Main duties of the job

*Provide in and out-patient care to pre-operative, operative and post operative conventional cardiac surgical patients including ward rounds and residential on call commitments where directed. This includes attending in house conventional cardiac surgical MDTs. The registrar will have access to conventional cardiac theatre lists, outpatient clinics, attend ward rounds of the assigned consultant, and departmental meetings.
