Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Clinical Perfusion Scientist to join our dynamic department and support the Cardiac Surgical Unit at University Hospitals Birmingham, under the direct supervision of an accredited Clinical Perfusion Scientist at all times. On completion of the training programme the qualified Clinical Perfusion Scientist at UHB will be proficient in working autonomously to deliver complex Perfusion techniques covering a wide range of services including Cardiothoracic and Liver transplantation, complex Aortic Surgery and various types of mechanical circulatory support.
A successful applicant will undertake training in Clinical Perfusion techniques in accordance with national guidelines leading to the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists Accreditation Certificate and an MSc in Clinical Perfusion Science. The applicant will need to hold an appropriate scientific/medical based degree with Honors (Minimum 2:1) that should satisfy the entry requirements for eligibility onto the Bristol University Masters degree in Clinical Perfusion Science.
With the appropriate levels of supervision the post holder will be supported with training to develop the ability to manage complex cases independently. They will be accountable for their own professional actions and recognise their own professional boundaries through interpretation of clinical/professional policies and within defined departmental, national protocols and policies.
Main duties of the job
To maintain intense levels of concentration, monitoring patients' vital parameters for prolonged periods of time.
To maintain calm during emergency and high-pressure situations while remaining able to communicate effectively and clearly to colleagues in the multidisciplinary team.
Monitor a range of clinical information and act within procedural guidelines under the strict supervision of an accredited perfusionist.
Develop adaptive skills that meet the individual needs of the patient; often in demanding clinical circumstances.
Develop the situational awareness that is vital for the role.
To demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice with peers and mentors.
Demonstrate presentation skills to communicate effectively at local and national level.
Demonstrate effective relationships with proactive communication mechanisms.
Perform 150 supervised CPB cases and maintain the online College of perfusion training electronic log book.
Successfully complete the Masters degree in Perfusion Science at the University of Bristol.
To demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to Society of Perfusionists of Great Britain and Ireland guidelines to ensure best perfusion practice and work towards accreditation.
Develop the skills and knowledge required by Clinical Perfusion Scientists.
To apply the principles of clinical governance to professional practice.
Adhere to trust policies and procedures.
Create, maintain and take responsibility for a healthy and safe working environment.
