Job summary
Would you like to work in of one of the largest Critical Care units in Europe caring for patients across a variety of specialities including neurology, trauma, respiratory, burns, ENT, transplant and The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine? Due to new funding, we are seeking a Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist keen to lead provision of SLT services for Critical Care patients in our specialist tertiary centre. This post is a fixed-term 12-month post with a view to become permanent if service KPIs are met.
The Critical Care SLT service includes this post, several Highly Specialist SLTs, a Team Lead SLT and a Specialist SLT. newly qualified SLTs supporting patients through the pathway from admission, treatment, acute inpatient management and rehabilitation. This role will benefit from operational support from inpatient and outpatient clinical leads, a Professional Lead for SLT and a Consultant SLT.
We have a large yet close-knit, highly skilled team who contribute to our robust supervision structure. Innovation, participation in research and clinical/professional development are actively encouraged.

Main duties of the job
This role is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham within the Critical Care team. The successful candidate will have a clear passion in assessing and managing dysphagia, communication difficulties and tracheostomy within a critical care setting.
Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
*working autonomously as a Clinical Specialist within the Critical Care service, taking clinical responsibility for the assessment and management of patients within these pathways
*driving key performance indicators (KPIs) and collaborating with the MDT and Clinical Service Lead with an aim to meet relevant national guidelines
*carrying a clinical caseload and work at an advanced level of clinical practice as the lead SLT providing a clinical specialist service for Critical Care, including with tracheostomy and ventilator requirements
*responding to Trust, regional and national initiatives and advising on clinical and professional strategy
*provide expert clinical advice and guidance on matters relating to SLT delivery
*leading audit and research projects to evaluate service delivery
*educating, training and developing staff within, and outside of, therapy services
*supporting clinical leads, professional lead and consultant SLT in operational management of the wider team as required
