University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Band 8d Head of Clinical Computer and Imaging Science Service

The closing date is 12 April 2026

Job summary

Due to a retirement there is an opportunity to lead one of the largest dedicated Clinical Scientific Computing teams in the country.

The Clinical Computing and Imaging Sciences Service (CCISS) is an enthusiastic team of 11.3 scientists and technologists. As one of the 5 services in the Department of Medical Physics, CCISS delivers clinical and scientific computing services with a strong focus on support for the large, specialist, radiotherapy service at UHB. This service relies on a complex combination of equipment from Elekta, Accuray and RaySearch to deliver nationally leading levels of technical radiotherapy (IG-IMRT, SABR etc). Reliable operation and interoperability of these systems are high priorities for us.

The CCISS team takes the lead on data extracts, analysis and dashboards for radiotherapy data; undertakes clinical and scientific software development in support of the radiotherapy service, particularly providing data assurance and visualisation tools; and manages computing infrastructure for clinical and service development in radiotherapy. In addition CCISS supports development, trials and research work through provision of appropriate data pipelines, and curation and analysis of data for activities including machine learning.

CCISS also provides substantial computing support for the HSE Approved Dosimetry Service for RRPPS, the regional specialist service for radiation safety and imaging quality assurance advice.

Main duties of the job

You should be a highly experienced state registered Clinical Scientist who is enthusiastic and self-motivated and works well as part of a multidisciplinary team. You should have strong technical skills coupled with a good effective knowledge of the regulations and standards as they apply to clinical scientific computing. You should already have significant leadership and management experience, combined with the ambition and ideas to pursue research interests and improve the quality of our service.

A focus on safety and quality is important -- you will need to be able to assess risk for clinical computing systems, and to be responsible for CCISS documents in the ISO9001 certified quality systems of radiotherapy and RRPPS.

Excellent leadership and communication skills are essential for this role. You will lead the CCISS team, facilitating the development of your colleagues, and supporting them as they maintain and develop the services you provide. You will also liaise with the senior management in Medical Physics and with colleagues in other services at UHB, such as radiotherapy and IT, to ensure that appropriate clinical and scientific computing services are provided.

This post could accommodate 5 day or 4 extended day working. There are occasions where evening and/or weekend working is required to carry out essential works.

For a discussion please contact Stuart Green, Director of Medical Physics at stuart.green@uhb.nhs.uk. Provisional interview date is Friday 1st May 2026
