Job summary

The Medical Engineer provides advanced technical expertise in the maintenance, repair, and management of a broad range of medical devices and systems.

This role requires a high level of independent problemsolving, sound technical judgement, and the ability to lead complex engineering tasks with minimal supervision.

Key responsibilities include performing specialist fault diagnosis, carrying out planned and corrective maintenance, supporting equipment lifecycle management, and ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

The Medical Engineer will act as a technical escalation point for junior staff, contribute to service improvement initiatives, and liaise with clinical teams to ensure equipment reliability and availability.

The role includes participation in the oncall rota to provide urgent outofhours technical support for critical medical equipment.

Main duties of the job

Carry out planned preventative maintenance.

Perform corrective maintenance and repairs to restore equipment to safe operation.

Conduct safety and performance checks in line with standards.

Investigate and diagnose equipment faults using specialist test equipment and technical manuals.

Apply systematic problemsolving to resolve technical issues.

Install, configure, and calibrate new medical devices.

Ensure equipment is verified for clinical use and meets safety requirements.

Maintain documentation, service records, and compliance with MHRA, ISO, and local governance standards.

Participate in audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations.

Provide training and advice to clinical staff on safe and effective use of equipment.

Support users with operational queries and minor troubleshooting.

Assist in equipment evaluation, selection, procurement, and replacement planning.

Contribute to asset management and inventory control.

Act as a point of contact between clinical teams, manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors.

Provide expert guidance on equipment capability, safety, and suitability.

OnCall & Emergency Support

Participate in the oncall rota to provide urgent technical assistance outside normal hours.

Continuous Improvement & Professional Development

Contribute to service improvements and engineering projects.

Keep knowledge up to date.

Qualifications

Essential

  • *Professional electronics knowledge through BEng in electronics or equivalent.
  • *Manufacturer approved technical training on a wide range of complex medical equipment.
  • *Evidence of attendance of short courses and regular updating of training required

Desirable

  • *Continual Professional Development to obtain registration requirements with the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM).

Experience

Essential

  • *Continual Professional Development to obtain registration requirements with the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM).
  • *Substantial experience in the repair and maintenance of medical equipment.
  • *A comprehensive understanding and competence in the repair and maintenance of medical equipment specific to the section.
  • *Ability to record and analyse work data.
  • *Relevant knowledge and competence in electronics, mechanics, pneumatics, anaesthetics, gas, infusion therapies computing and physiological measurement, as appropriate to the section
  • *Experience of working in Maternity, specifically neonatal units.

Additional Criteria

  • *Dexterity and good hand-eye coordination required to work on a range of complex equipment
  • *Hold UK Driving Licence
  • *Must regularly participate in the departments "on call" service as required.
  • *Ability to work and communicate with Clinical and Nursing staff.

  • *Able to communicate effectively.
  • *Accepts supervision.
  • *Commitment to health and safety
  • *Capable of producing high standards of work.
