Band 2 Imaging Department Assistant

Job summary

An Imaging Department Assistant (IDA) supports the multidisciplinary imaging team in delivering a patient-centred imaging service. The role involves assisting radiographers and clinical staff, maintaining a safe and clean patient environment, and ensuring patients are moved safely and with dignity to and from examination areas.

The IDA may also assist during imaging procedures, provide administrative and reception support, greet patients on arrival, and handle telephone enquiries. The post holder will be required to work shift patterns including long days over 7 days and bank holidays.

The role requires maintaining high standards of patient care, including effective communication, confidentiality, respect for individual beliefs and choices, anti-discriminatory practice, and patient safety, while working under supervision and following established procedures. The post holder is also expected to develop the knowledge and skills required to meet relevant occupational standards.

The role requires working across the Imaging Department, supporting CT, MRI, Ultrasound (US), and Digital Radiography (DR) services for inpatients, outpatients, and patients attending the Emergency Department (ED).

The role may also require working at Solihull MRI, the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Washwood Heath, and Birmingham Maternity services, supporting imaging service delivery

Main duties of the job

* Work across the Imaging Department, including X-ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, and Fluoroscopy, providing support to clinical staff and assisting in the smooth delivery of imaging services. The role involves helping to prepare examination rooms, supporting patient flow, assisting radiographers where appropriate, and ensuring patients are safely escorted and cared for throughout their imaging journey. The post holder will work flexibly across different modalities to support service demands and departmental needs, maintaining high standards of patient care, safety, and efficiency within the imaging service.

* To observe patients in waiting areas, reporting changes or concerns with the patient's condition to a radiographer or registered nurse immediately.

* To prepare jugs of water /fluids that form part of the patient preparation.

* Prepare and lay sterile trolleys for biopsies and drainages.

* To prepare examination rooms, assist in clinical areas and with moving patients.

* To be able to identify respiratory or cardiac arrest and take action immediately.

* To attend to patients' needs whilst in waiting areas and after examinations, for example, making and giving drinks, contacting relatives/carers.

* To actively participate in the departmental quality assurance programme. Participate in audit and data collection as required.

* To report to a radiographer immediately where a serious clinical incident may arise.
