Job summary

The Estates Officer (Mechanical) plays a vital role in ensuring the safe, efficient and reliable operation of mechanical engineering services across the Trust's estate. Acting as a technical specialist, the postholder provides expert maintenance, fault diagnosis, repair and compliance management for a wide range of systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), medical gases, hot and cold water, pressure systems and specialist healthcare installations.

In this supervisory position, the Estates Officer oversees skilled trades staff and specialist contractors, ensuring highquality workmanship, safe working practices and minimal disruption to clinical services. The role requires strong communication and relationshipbuilding skills, as the postholder routinely coordinates with clinical teams, shares technical information, and provides assurance on planned and reactive maintenance activities

Main duties of the job

The Estates Officer (Mechanical) delivers expert maintenance, fault diagnosis and compliance oversight across critical mechanical systems including HVAC, water safety, ventilation and medical gas infrastructure. The role supervises trades staff and contractors, ensuring highquality workmanship, safe systems of work and minimal disruption to clinical services. Responsibilities include planning and prioritising tasks through CAFM, conducting risk assessments, supporting audits, and maintaining statutory records. The postholder manages resources, coordinates emergency responses, and provides technical guidance to clinical and nonclinical teams. Acting as an Authorised/Responsible Person under multiple HTMs, the Estates Officer ensures regulatory compliance, operational resilience and effective service delivery aligned with Trust values. In addition, the role contributes to the development of maintenance strategies, supports asset improvement, and drives continuous service enhancements by analysing performance data, identifying risks, and implementing effective engineering solutions that improve safety, efficiency and patient environments across the Estate

  • *Basic education to GCSE/'O' Level in Maths and English or post-Secondary Education training in a relevant field
  • *NVQ Level 3 in a relevant Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering discipline plus additional knowledge acquired through the completion of City & Guilds of London Institute Certificate in either;
  • oCourse 205 in Mechanical Engineering Maintenance Part 2 (205-3)
  • oCourse 596 in Plumbing Advanced Craft Certificate (596-2) in Both - Sanitary Plumbing Plus, Installation and Maintenance of Domestic Heating Systems and Appliances.
  • oCourse 596 Plumbing Craft Certificate (596-1) Plus course 599 Construction Service Welding Advanced Craft
  • oDegree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience

  • *Experience in a complex HVAC engineering environment
