Job summary

The Senior Tradesperson (Building Fabric) plays a key role in supporting the safe, efficient and compliant upkeep of the estate across a busy healthcare setting. The position delivers a wide range of building fabric activities, including maintenance, repairs, planned works, surveys and compliance checks, ensuring the estate remains functional, safe and aligned with statutory and Trust requirements. The role involves overseeing daily tasks, guiding maintenance assistants, apprentices and contractors, and coordinating activity to minimise disruption to clinical areas.

Working as a Competent Person under relevant standards, the postholder carries out inspections, evaluates risks, and ensures assets meet regulatory expectations. They use CAFM systems to organise and track work, respond to urgent issues, and support oncall duties to maintain service continuity. The role demands strong technical judgement, the ability to work independently, and the resilience to operate in physically demanding and sometimes hazardous environments.

The Senior Tradesperson contributes to audits, operational improvements and team development while upholding the Trust's values of kindness, connection and boldness within everyday practice

Main duties of the job

This role involves delivering a wide range of buildingfabric tasks, including inspecting structures, addressing defects, and completing refurbishment or minor construction activities. It requires examining fixtures, finishes and internal components to identify concerns, documenting findings, and highlighting issues that require escalation. The postholder applies technical judgement to resolve faults, selecting suitable methods and materials while maintaining safe working practices.

The position includes reviewing technical drawings and specifications, ensuring works meet required standards and regulatory expectations. Duties also include carrying out statutory checks such as firedoor inspections and contributing to wider compliance activities. Maintaining uptodate records, supporting updates to maintenance schedules and risk assessments, and ensuring asset data remains accurate form an important part of the role.

Daily responsibilities include prioritising tasks, responding to urgent issues, coordinating resources and updating digital systems to reflect progress. The postholder provides direction to assistants, apprentices and contractors, monitoring performance and maintaining safe conditions, particularly when working at height, in confined spaces or in other highrisk environments. Additional tasks include undertaking minor upgrade works, maintaining workshop standards, supporting audits and surveys, and contributing to improvements in operational delivery.
