Job summary

We are looking for highly skilled mechanical specialist responsible for maintaining, repairing, and optimising complex mechanical systems across a large healthcare estate. The role ensures the safe, reliable operation of HVAC, medical gas, water, heating, and ventilation systems while acting as a Competent Person under key HTMs and statutory regulations. Provides expert diagnostic capability, conducts planned and reactive maintenance, and performs commissioning, testing, and compliance tasks to national standards.

The position oversees maintenance assistants, apprentices, and contractors, ensuring highquality workmanship and minimal disruption to clinical services. Utilises CAFM systems to prioritise workload, supports the oncall rota, and contributes to audits, risk assessments, and continuous service improvement. Works autonomously in challenging environments, applying strong problemsolving, organisational, and communication skills. Promotes a safe working culture, supports team development, and upholds Trust values of kindness, connection, and boldness.

Main duties of the job

Carry out technical tasks on a wide range of mechanical installations, applying specialist knowledge to inspect, test, adjust, and restore equipment across the estate. Undertake detailed fault investigations, review engineering data, and implement corrective measures in line with regulatory obligations and organisational procedures. Interpret technical drawings, complete system checks, and verify performance of newly installed components.

Coordinate daily activity for maintenance assistants and external contractors, ensuring they follow safety rules and correct processes. Liaise with site teams to schedule works, update progress records, and log findings using digital management tools. Review risks, update assessments, and contribute to improving maintenance programmes and work methods.

Prepare plant areas, access equipment safely, and handle tools requiring precision and control. Support emergency responses, including infrastructure incidents and adverse weather situations. Maintain workshop standards, monitor stock requirements, and assist with minor alterations to building systems. Engage in training, share expertise with colleagues, and participate in audits to uphold high engineering and compliance standards.
