Job summary
This is a fast-paced, rewarding role where you'll support consultants and clinical teams with medical typing, patient coordination and Resident Doctor rota management, while acting as a key point of contact for patients and families. You'll help keep pathways moving by producing timely clinic letters and discharge summaries, managing appointments, supporting RTT timelines and ensuring effective communication across multidisciplinary teams.

Main duties of the job
As a Medical Secretary within Healthcare of Older People (HCOP), you will provide high-quality administrative and secretarial support to consultants and multidisciplinary teams, playing a key role in ensuring safe, efficient and compassionate patient care.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include audio and copy typing of clinic letters, discharge summaries, medical reports and correspondence, ensuring these are completed accurately and within agreed turnaround times. You will support patient pathways by arranging appointments, managing consultant diaries, coordinating theatre or day-case bookings where required, and maintaining up-to-date patient information across Trust IT systems.
You will act as a first point of contact for patients, relatives, carers, GPs and healthcare professionals, responding to enquiries sensitively and professionally, often in emotionally challenging situations. You will actively manage incoming calls, post and emails, escalating concerns appropriately and supporting effective communication across the clinical team.
