UHB Neonatal Service: Where a passion and career come together!
Are you a highly skilled Neonatal Nurse who is passionate about providing leaderships skills to an MDT to enable excellent clinical care to all babies and their families?
Do you have extensive experience working within the Neonatal ITU/HDU/SCBU environment, skills include coordinating shifts, utilising resources and working collaboratively with a team of professionals?
If so, then the Band 7 Senior Ward Sister post at UHB might be the perfect job for you!
Our large Neonatal service is based across two hospitals: Heartlands houses our level 3 unit and is a specialist cooling centre, which has 32 cots, we have a Transitional care unit located within Post Natal ward.
Good Hope is a level 1 unit with 12 SCBU cots.
We also have a Neonatal Community Outreach Team that provide care enabling early discharge and promotes ficare.
We work closely with Maternity across both sites to manage flow and capacity within the service.
As a Senior Ward Sister at UHB you will work alongside our friendly, dynamic, talented team of professionals to deliver safe, compassionate care to our local community. The post holder will be a professional role model with high standards to promote excellent care, culture and civility with our service.
This post will be from Mon-Fri and you may be required to work across both our sites.
Main duties of the job
As a Senior Ward Sister you will be a positive role model and be responsible for the safe management and operational day to day functioning of the Neonatal service.
To provide a clear focus for leadership and to be responsible for ensuring the provision of a high standard of support for staff wellbeing to enable them to thrive at work.
You will coordinate the team, appropriately allocating shifts to staff on allocate and providing expert guidance and supervision to the nursing workforce.
You must have excellent communication skills which enable you to liaise effectively with families and colleagues. You will need to solve problems using critical thinking skills, manage capacity and flow and escalating concerns where appropriate.
Respond to FFT patient feedback or concerns raised in a timely professional manner and support colleagues to resolve challenging situations.
Act as a change agent, promote evidence-based practice and continually work to improve the quality of services.
Support the provision of a learning environment for all staff and visiting learners.
Strive to provide a positive patient experience in a safe environment and actively promote family integrated care that respects and maintains dignity and human rights.
Identify and report safeguarding concerns following UHB procedures and ensuring accurate records are maintained.
You will work collaboratively with the MDT to ensure the smooth running of the Neonatal unit and you will report directly to the Neonatal Matron.

- *Substantial relevant and recent clinical experience within a Neonatal care setting working as a deputy Manager Band 6 position including the supervision and education of junior staff/ students .
- *Can demonstrate understanding / experience / in practice based supervision / assessment as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
- *Demonstrable current, recent experience of team leadership and management within the healthcare setting.
- *Demonstrable understanding of the management responsibility for pay and non-pay resources associated with the clinical service.
- *Evidence of effective multi-professional working.
- *Experience of being a mentor
