Job summary

This role is to participate in the day-to-day workload of the mortuary services alongside other members of the mortuary team and includes handling approximately eight thousand deceased patients (across all sites) per year, removal of lines and other medical devices, facilitating viewings and identifications and interaction with a wide range of third parties (e.g. Bereavement Care, HM Coroner, FDs, engineers). Team working is essential.

Main duties of the job

This role is aimed at individuals who have existing mortuary experience and or their equivalents

1. This role requires dealing with deceased patients. What experience have you got in this kind of work?

2. Attention to detail is critical in hospital work. How do you avoid making typographical or checking errors in work that you do?

3. Describe your understanding of the relationship between the Bereavement and Mortuary Teams with respect to the deceased and their family?

4. Describe your experience with deceased and involvement with activities within a mortuary environment. This may be in a hospital, public or forensic mortuary or a FD setting.

Qualifications

Essential

  • *5 GCSEs or higher qualification including: English, maths, science or equivalent
  • *Level 3 Certificate in Anatomical Pathology Technology or equivalent knowledge acquired through experience in afterlife patient care.

Desirable

  • *Commitment to professional development through examinations and courses

Experience

Essential

  • *Worked in a healthcare/Funeral directing setting
  • *Demonstrable experience of communicating effectively and compassionately with distressed/bereaved relatives and carers.

Desirable

  • *Experience in basic mortuary or laboratory procedures and the use of equipment
  • *Knowledge of safe working practices including infectious diseases and dangerous chemicals/gases
  • *Use of computers including Word, Excel, and laboratory programs
  • *Knowledge of theoretical and practical skills required in the mortuary, medical terminology and general health and safety practices

Additional Criteria

  • *To support all UHB mortuary sites when required - for example during periods of annual leave or sickness.
  • *To take part in the paid on-call rota once trained and competent to do so.
