Job summary

We are delighted to advertise an exciting opportunity in the newly formed department of general internal medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. We are looking for highly motivated individuals to work in a combined role with any group 1 specialty, building a collaborative team of Consultants who will deliver a high-quality internal medicine service, alongside specialty interests in a flexible working pattern.

Each post is 1.0 WTE, with 0.5 WTE GIM and 0.5 WTE in specialty. For their GIM responsibilities, the post holders will be responsible for inpatient care on ward 513 as the newly formed internal medicine ward, with a one week in 6 pattern, including weekends. The remaining 5 weeks are flexible in working pattern and focus on Palliative Care sessions with GIM activity including a weekly MDT, educational activities, monthly governance and SPA time. There is no evening or overnight on call attached to these posts, and we welcome applications from those who would like to work flexibly on non-ward weeks, please see detailed job plan below.

The 0.5 WTE palliative medicine consultant component of this post will be based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital working with the Supportive and Palliative care team led by Dr Milind Arolker on this site. This team works across this hospital site receiving referrals across the whole clinical spectrum in adult medicine.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to assist in supporting team members on other sites across UHB, on occasion, but this will not be routine or onerous. Allowance will also be made for the weekend on call work in GIM when considering the post holders level of commitment to the palliative medicine on call rota -this is currently 1:9

Specialty DCCs will be determined by the specialty CSL and will vary in component but not exceed 4DCCs unless agreed with the candidate. The weekend frequency is 1:6 and there is no expectation for additional specialty-based weekend work.
