Locum Consultant in General Internal Medicine

Job summary

We are delighted to advertise a locum opportunity in the newly formed department of general internal medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. This is a 6-month fixed term locum post to provide inpatient care on the internal medicine ward at QEHB, Monday to Friday daytimes with no weekend, evening or overnight on call attached to these posts.

Each post is 1.0 WTE, with 1.5 SPAs for revalidation, appraisal and audit, and 8.5 DCCs for inpatient care. The post holder will have full responsibilities for patients under their care within the context of a multidisciplinary team structure and share clinical responsibility with colleagues in running the clinical work of the department. The post holder is encouraged to support the education of resident doctors working on the ward with opportunities to work as a clinical supervisor for those who are accredited with the GMC.

Main duties of the job

This is a 6 month, fixed term locum, focussed on ward cover for the main internal medicine ward within the QE. There is no out of hours work, and the main structure of the week follows the pattern below, with SPA flexibly worked around ward work. There are opportunities to expand educational responsibilities and develop clinical roles depending on the experience and interest of the successful candidate. Candidates should have a CCT or CESR in general internal medicine, or be eligible for either within 6 months of interview date. Experience of working in the NHS at Consultant or higher specialist trainee level is essential.

The successful candidate must have well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and be able to deal effectively with clinicians from all disciplines. It is important for the post holder to be able to work effectively in teams both clinical and non-clinical to ensure high quality care is provided, and a robust framework of learning, teaching and clinical governance is maintained.
