Job summary
University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust (UHB) is recruiting a haematology consultant, specialising in myeloid malignancies and allogeneic stem cell transplantation to join their dynamic team. The successful post holder will join an innovative and supportive team of consultant haematologists and clinical academics focussed on delivering specialist haematology care and transformational academic research for one of the largest trusts in the UK.
The successful candidate will work within a team comprising of dedicated speciality doctors, resident doctors, specialist nurses, nurses, advanced clinical practitioners, physician associates, clinical psychologists, pharmacists, therapists ,administrative, data and quality teams.
UHB Haematology Service delivers tertiary specialised services including Level 3 & 4 stem cell transplantation, CAR-T cell therapy, gene-edited stem cell therapy, teenage and young adult (TYA) cancer care, full therapeutic apheresis/plasma exchange services including in house extracorporeal photopheresis, a specialist integrated haematological malignancy diagnostic service (known as MIRHO), the regional comprehensive haemophilia centre including provision of gene therapy and TTP care. Inpatient care is based at QEHB, which has more than 60 inpatient beds along with the dedicated Young Persons Unit for TYA care. Outpatient services include ambulatory and day unit provision of chemotherapy, cellular therapy and other haematological treatments.
Main duties of the job
BCCTT performed more than 330 cellular therapies in 2024, of which 119 were allogeneic stem cell transplants.
The new appointee will join this integrated team delivering complex therapies including stem cell transplantation for patients from the West Midlands with myeloid malignancies. A regional myeloid MDT complements our internal haematology and transplant MDTs and this represents an excellent opportunity for the appointee to contribute to the regions approach to myeloid malignancies.The appointee will also have opportunities to directly contribute to the quality and strategy of BCCTT which successfully received JACIE reaccreditation March 2024.
Clinical
The appointee should be able to demonstrate experience and specific interest in the management of patients with myeloid malignancies including AML, MDS, myeloproliferative conditions and bone marrow failure syndromes. They should also have knowledge and experience of the delivery of stem cell transplantation and post-transplant care, including management of transplant complications.
Inpatients
BCCTT is classified as a BCSH level 4 and CAR-T facility and maintains JACIE accreditation as a clinical and collection facility.
Outpatients
The Centre for Clinical Haematology (CCH) is the day case, apheresis/ECP, outpatient facility at QEH, refurbished in 2018. CCH co-locates clinical and research staff from the NHS and University of Birmingham. The IMPACT and TAP national trials programme is based in CCH.
