Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and adaptable individual to join and support our HIV clinical Nurse Specialist team based at Heartlands Hospital on a 1 year secondment for maternity cover from as early as mid-February 2026. Full time hours can be worked over four or five days / week in this role.
In conjunction with the Senior Nurse / Lead HIV CNS / Lead HIV Sexual health nurse, the post holder will be responsible for the delivery of high quality nursing to adult and transition patients under the care of the HIV Services at University Hospital Birmingham.
You should be able to evidence relevant nursing experience in HIV, Hepatitis, Infectious diseases, sexual health or related field to be shortlisted for this post. Health Assessment and Prescribing qualifications are advantageous but not essential for this secondment.
You should understand key aspects of the HIV action plan for England and be aware of BHIVA, BASHH & NHIVNA and their roles in managing HIV in the UK.
The successful candidate will be offered role specific training to develop their experience in HIV specialism, offering knowledge and skills to support the field of HIV, Infectious diseases, Sexual Health Practice and / or Sexual Health Advising.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will have direct and remote clinical involvement and be jointly responsible for the management of a caseload of clients with complex needs, acting as a specialist in this field.
The post holder will at times work as an autonomous practitioner dealing with patients presenting with complex conditions not limited to HIV and a wide range of socio-economic issues affecting their healthcare. This will include providing highly specialist care, treatment, advice, information, education and counselling, to patients, families, partners & carers living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, in accordance with the local UHB, British HIV Association [BHIVA] & British Association of Sexual Health and HIV [BASHH] guidelines.
The successful candidate will contribute and work within a large, dedicated and supportive multi-disciplinary team consisting of Nurses, Consultants, Health Advisers, Pharmacists, therapies, social support workers, peer support & wider agencies caring for patients with diagnosed with HIV, their associated conditions and expanded health & wellbeing.
We offer in person & telephone reviews to our patients and continue support in between appointments for a wide range of complex issues. We support students within the department. There is future scope to offer outreach / community services in this role.
