University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Band 5 Clinical Photographer/Trainee Clinical Photographer

The closing date is 04 February 2026

Job summary

We're looking for individuals to join our forward thinking, innovative Clinical Photography team at UHB. You will expand your skillset, experience a range of imaging techniques and make a big difference to our patients and their families.

We provide a range of clinical imaging and general photographic services, including Thermography to promote innovation and research. We work with a variety of specialities including Ophthalmology, Maxillofacial, Burns & Plastics and Dermatology.

We're looking for an excellent communicator who is motivated and enthusiastic, with outstanding technical ability to join our growing team.

We offer extensive training opportunities and support for staff to progress in their chosen career.

We would like the candidate to hold a degree in Medical Illustration, or a degree in Photography plus the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Photography and be AHCS registered. For the right person, we would be open to recruit a Trainee Clinical Photographer on an Annex 21 contract, who would be funded to complete the Staffordshire Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Photography. Completing the course takes 12 months and successful trainees would enrol in January 2027.

You'll be covering Heartlands, Solihull, Good Hope and the Queen Elizabeth Hospitals, as well as community sites. Full and part time posts are available.

Main duties of the job

You'll be taking clinical photographs in various locations across UHB, including in our photographic studios, clinic rooms, wards and theatres. You'll use people skills and communication to give an excellent service to patients from all walks of life and make a difference to their care.

You'll be working in our highly regarded AI-based Teledermatology service, making sure patients with suspected skin cancer get the right treatment at the right time, taking high quality photographs and dermoscopy.

When requested you will also work closely with the Communications Team to take public relations photography which will be used across the Trust and externally to show the best of what we do.

You'll follow local policies and procedures to process and upload images to our secure image database and will be expected to use both everyday IT packages and specialist software to complete tasks.

You'll contribute to the day to day running of the department and make sure that all of our camera equipment is well maintained and consumables are recorded and ordered as necessary.

You'll be the face of our department and help to make sure that relevant consent, confidentiality and photographic policies are upheld and images are taken safely and securely to protect our patients.

If you think this sounds right for you, we'd love to receive your application. To arrange a visit/discuss the role, please contact Becky Lee, Medical Illustration Services Manager or Robert MacMillan, Photographic Manager, on 01213712460.
