Job summary
The overall purpose of the local Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme is to enable detection of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms in order to save lives.
As a Screening Technician, the post holder will be trained to provide a high quality screening service to detect abdominal aortic aneurysms in men aged 65+ years in Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Sandwell, Solihull and South East Staffordshire in line with the standards and guidelines set out by the National Screening Committee and local policies.
Technicians will be required to travel to designated sites through Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Sandwell, Solihull and South East Staffordshire and must have access to their own vehicle and have a full driving licence.
The Screener Technician will be responsible for the efficient and effective delivery of all aspects of screening clinics in a range of community settings.
Screeners will be hosted by and managed by University Hospitals Birmingham, however will work in collaboration with the local PCTs. A senior sonographer will provide regular supervision of screeners.
Screening technicians will undergo a training programme and assessment leading to a competency in screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms.
Through training, screening technicians will develop a high level of concentration and fine manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination skills necessary to produce accurate imaging and measurements within a defined period, working to national and local protocols.
Main duties of the job
Once competent, screening technicians will operate screening clinics effectively and
will:
Travel to clinic using their own transport -- sometimes driving long distances at all times of year.
Communicate effectively with men attending for initial screening, ensuring they understand the screening process and have adequate information on the benefits and risks of AAA screening to allow an informed decision to be made before participating.
Screen men aged 65+ for abdominal aortic aneurysm using portable ultrasound equipment and ensuring that patients are positioned correctly.
Will undertake routine tasks to ensure clinical areas and equipment are clear and safe and will maintain safe environment for staff and patients.
Ensure adherence to guidelines for infection control.
Accurately record all screening results.
Appropriately review screening results and follow pathway guidance.
Inform men of their screening result (this may involve the provision of 'bad news') and if necessary, support them to make an informed choice about ongoing management of their AAA.
Complete all necessary documentation to ensure effective referral (where appropriate) into a surveillance programme, to a nurse practitioner for diagnostic investigation.
Adhere to national and local AAASP screening protocols and procedures.
Deal with and report any compliments, complaints or comments to the Programme Manager and work with them to explore ways to improve the service.
